University Place

University Place is Manchester University's newest conference venue. Located at the centre of Europe's largest urban higher education precinct, this fantastic venue is highly suited to hosting an international conference like Wikimania. The largest of the rooms is a 1000 seat auditorium. This auditorium is complete with both audio-visual and computer facilities for delivering presentations. The ground floor for the auditorium also has wifi reception but it should be feasible to increase the wifi strength with signal boosters to reach the rest of the facility.

Some general information includes:

  • 1,000 seat semi-circular auditorium (divisible into two theatres of 600 and 270)
  • Additional 24 flat-floored seminar rooms accommodating 20-120 delegates
  • 500 sq m exhibition area and adjacent marquee space
  • 400 seat restaurant
  • Wi-fi access to exhibition, restaurant and auditorium areas
  • On site audio visual aids and professional technicians on site
  • Adjacent to Roscoe and Schuster buildings offering a further 6 lecture theatres seating from 150-474

Transport: Getting to the United Kingdom

International travel to the United Kingdom is extensive. Access to the UK is provided by 30 international airports providing travel to 200 destinations, 8 ports with international passenger ferry services to Europe, and a rail link to mainland Europe via the Channel Tunnel.

Train (via Belgium and France)

Eurostar high-speed trains run between London (St Pancras International), Ebbsfleet and Ashford through the Channel Tunnel to Paris (Gare du Nord), Lille and Brussels. During the summer an additional weekly train operates to Avignon and during the winter a weekly service runs a ski service direct to the French Alps. Through tickets and connections are available in Lille, Paris and Brussels from many European cities to most large UK cities.

Journey times average two hours fifteen minutes to and from Paris, and one hour fifty minutes to Brussels. A second class return from Paris to London costs between €85 and €230. While it can be cheaper to fly from London to Paris using a low-cost airline, bear in mind that the journeys to the airports can be expensive and time-consuming.

Manchester became the first city in the UK to acquire a modern light rail tram system when the Manchester Metrolink opened in 1992. The present system mostly runs on former commuter rail lines converted for light rail use, and crosses the city centre via on-street tram lines. The 23 mi ({{Rnd/bExpression error: Unexpected < operator.|Expression error: Unexpected < operator.|(Expression error: Unexpected < operator.)|Expression error: Unexpected < operator. }} km)-network consists of three lines with 37 stations (including five on-street tram stops in the centre). An expansion programme is underway.

The city has one of the most extensive bus networks outside London with over 50 bus companies operating in the Greater Manchester region radiating from the city and the city also operates a three route zero-fare bus service called Metroshuttle which carries commuters around Manchester's business districts.
