- Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)
After discussing with several Wikidata volunteers, involved in small languages on Wikidata or Wikipedia, I'm summarizing here what could be presented around Wikidata.
I tried to keep it short on purpose. Each proposal is independent from the others, and can be discussed, modified, especially the format and length.
Introduction: What is Wikidata, and how can we support the minority language communities?
- Format: talk
- Duration: 50min + 10min questions
- Possible speaker: Léa Lacroix or volunteer
Abstract: This is an introduction for anyone who doesn’t know Wikidata yet. Discover the basics about the open knowledge base, how its content is organized, how to edit, add and query data, and a few examples of how Wikidata can be reused on the Wikimedia projects to support the small languages and their communities.
ArticlePlaceholder: support the communities and help small Wikipedias to grow
- Format: talk
- Duration: 20min + 10min questions
- Speaker: Lucie Kaffee
Abstract: The ArticlePlaceholder uses the multilingual information contained in Wikidata to enrich the content of Wikipedia, providing basic information about a topic, a groundwork for the articles that don't exist yet. In this talk, we will learn how the ArticlePlaceholder is used on several Wikipedias, such as the Welsh Wikipedia, and what are the outcomes for the communities. We will learn more about the feedback collected from the editors, and the next steps of the tool.
Lexicographical data: when words enter Wikidata
- Format: talk
- Duration: 20min + 10min question
- Speaker: Léa Lacroix or volunteer
Abstract: After five years storing and describing concepts, Wikidata is about to start collecting information about words and phrases. The lexicographical data will bring structured, machine-readable, multilingual and community-powered data, that can be reused on Wiktionary or other projects. We will present the first version of the tool and discuss about the use cases of lexicographical data.
Language gaps in Wikidata
- Format: discussion
- Duration: 40min
- Speaker: Lucie Kaffee
Abstract: Wikidata has the ability to serve the needs of many language communities and could change the way computers interact with language online completely - that all depends on the community though. We will first introduce the state of multilingualism, languages and their interconnectedness in Wikidata to understand where we are now and to draw a plan where we want to go. The main part, however, should be an active discussion on what is needed to add more language labels- do we need different tools? Do we need to include more small language communities? And how can we approach that?
Workshop: create an automatic infobox on your wiki
- Format: workshop
- Duration: 60min
- Speakers: Amador Alvarez, Theklan, PauCabot
Abstract: Having data from Wikidata in your Wikipedia infoboxes will save your community a lot of time. The basic automatic infobox will display, update information in your language, and good news, it’s pretty easy to set up! During this workshop, you will learn how to set up an automatic infobox and will try it directly on your wiki.
Translathon: improve Wikidata in your language in a few minutes
- Format/Duration: workshop of 30min, could also be a permanent booth in parallel of the sessions
- Speaker: Nicolas Vigneron
Abstract: One of the goals of the collaborative knowledge base is to provide information in all the languages. There is a lot of work left to do, but you can help! In a few minutes, learn how to find labels that need translation in your language, and to improve Wikidata items.
