About Wikimedia UK
|
Wikimedia UK is the local Wikimedia chapter covering the United Kingdom. The chapter is incorporated under the name "Wiki UK Limited" and uses Wikimedia UK as its operating name. We were approved as a chapter by the Wikimedia Foundation on 12 January 2009.
Wikimedia UK is a separate organization from the Wikimedia Foundation, and has no control over the contents of Wikipedia or any other projects run by the Wikimedia Foundation. We exist to help collect, develop and distribute freely licensed knowledge (and other educational, cultural and historic content), which we do by supporting the charitable activities of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Open decisions
|
As an organisation promoting open knowledge, we also want to be leaders in transparency regarding our decision making:
- Our constitution puts decision making in the hands of members wherever possible
- We seek the widest possible membership base
- We are led by a seven person Board of Trustees, elected by the members at the AGM
- All Board meetings are held in public on the internet. We publish our Agenda beforehand and minutes afterwards
- We pledge to discuss all major decisions with our supporters beforehand though our mailing list and our wiki
- We keep supporters informed through our monthly Newsletter which you can subscribe to here.

Join the chapter
|
Do you want to help support the chapter, and help share the world's knowledge with everyone, everywhere? Please become a member! Membership is open to all; there are no restrictions in the location or age of members, and members do not need to be editors of any of the Wikimedia Foundation projects.
Membership costs just £12 per year (£6 for concessions). Members have the right to elect the Board, submit motions to and vote at AGMs, thereby playing a central role in determining the activities of the chapter.

Support us
|
We run several initiatives, including:
- Wikipedia Loves Art - generated over 11,000 free-content photographs in February 2009, which are currently being processed.
- We responded to a Copyright law consultation paper from the UK Intellectual Property Office in February 2009, and are expecting a follow up discussion paper in the autumn.
What would you like to see the Chapter do and support? Do you have an idea for an initiative that you'd like to see happen? Are you able to volunteer your time to help with an initiative? Please let us know, or share your ideas with us!
Would you like to help but don't have the time? Please consider donating and supporting our work financially. We prefer donations via cheque or bank transfer as this avoids us having to pay any fees. Alternatively, click below to pay with PayPal.
