RGS Wiki Workshop - In a nutshell

  • Where?: Royal Geographical Society, 1 Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AR
  • When?: Monday 7th July 2014, 1pm-5pm
  • Point of contact: Ben Parfitt or Toni Sant

The Royal Geographical Society is keen to nurture early-career researchers and their ability to communicate complex geographical ideas to a wider audience. RGS would also like to increase the amount of geographical content on Wikipedia. This workshop is designed to address these goals.

Target audience for this event: PhD students, early-career researchers, those interested in using Wikipedia in their research and/or teaching. Primarily academic community, but all welcome.

Agenda

  • Refreshments on arrival
1pm to 2pm - Introduction to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects (why do it, how to do it, etc)
2pm to 4pm – edit-a-thon (with tea & coffee available around 3pm)
4pm to 4:45pm (approx.) – feedback & wrap-up, then group discussion about possible ‘uses’ of Wikipedia (as an editor; for teaching & assessment; for research/outputs)

In the Edit-a-thon portion of the workshop, participants will contribute to one or more of the following, in a subject area that interests them/in which they are experienced:

  • Methods and techniques (in geography or supporting geographical research)
  • Influential geographers
  • Adding geographical perspectives to key issues (e.g. referencing published research)
