Wikimedian in Residence

Richard, I saw your post on Renata's page (I've been stalking her for years!) and it suddenly made me feel elderly and confused, two things I'm quite good at. Are these actual jobs ... as in, er, employment? Sorry if I am being dim but I am almost endlessly baffled by the pro-versus-volunteer thing, and am very far from clear on what this is. Please educate me very slightly? (Even if it's just read this link, fool!) (Declaration of Disinterest: sadly, I couldn't work in Scotland anyway, much though I would love to!) Cheers DBaK (talk) 16:23, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

So: yes! It's employment; a paid job, and it's sort of a cross between a trainer, a librarian, a curator and a Wikipedian. It's not paid editing - the job is more about facilitation of volunteers. The basic idea is that the (paid) WiR makes it easier for volunteer editors to write about things that the museum has access to. It might also include digitising some works, training curators, etc etc. I am a bit rubbish at explaining it, but the best introduction to it is probably here. Let me know if you want it explaining a bit more! Richard Symonds (WMUK) (talk) 18:34, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks very much for the reply and the link. It's very interesting - a whole strand of development of which I knew nothing. Amazing stuff. Cheers DBaK (talk) 08:23, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
