Sphingonet Wiki workshop - In a nutshell

What is it?

Sphingonet a European network of PhD-candidate and post-doc researchers focusing on Sphingolipids. Part of their activities is outreach work. As a part of the training offered to the network's members, we are organising an introduction to open science, with a focus on Wikipedia. They are having a meeting in Oxford in July and so the afternoon of 10th July, before the main meeting, will be focused on how Wikipedia works, and how to improve it with the attendees' specific knowledge - the audience is PhD students, postdoc and professors. The people on the network come from 10-12 different countries (UK, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland). The workshop could include working on translating various Wikipedia articles.

The goal of this event is to make a significant contribution to the quality of Wikipedia scientific content in Sphingonet-­‐related topics. The workshop will take place in Oxford, on the afternoon of Wednesday the 10th of July 2013, the day before the Sphingonet summer school starts. Majority of the attendees will not be familiar with Wikipedia editing - before the event, the attendees would receive information to prepare them for training. The hope is for the attendees to continue contributing to Wikipedia after the training.

As a preparation, the attendees have been asked to identify 2-3 topics and corresponding sources they want to focus on during the training, with the intention to improve relevant articles by the end of the day. It is anticipated that the topics may focus on specific proteins or enzymes.

Please note: this event is scheduled to start after lunch, which will not be served at this Wikipedia workshop.

The workshop will include information on common mistakes researchers make when editing Wikipedia, how to improve articles with illustrations, infoboxes, and other wiki goodies.

The afternoon will be divided into two parts, led by each of the trainers:

  • Toni Sant will present an introductory session about Wikipedia and sharing knowledge on the Internet. The presentation will involve a discussion on how Wikipedia and Wikimedia fit into the landscape of Open Access and Open Content in advanced research. This will be followed by a practical session of Basic Wikipedia training.
  • Tea/coffee break
  • Richard Nevell will discuss ways to contribute to Wikimedia other than by writing encyclopedia articles (e.g. sharing images; rendering structure data in visual form; giving research a suitable licence). This part of the workshop will also include a Q&A and more hands‐on Wikipedia editing, which in essence will lead into an editathon of pages relevant to Sphingonet members.
