OXFORD TO HOST GLOBAL WIKIPEDIA CONFERENCE
Hundreds to visit city next summer
Oxford will host a global conference next year bring together hundreds of people who contribute to the Wikipedia family of websites. The "Wikimania" conference is an annual conference focused on how to improve the websites and make them more accessible to potential users.
The first Wikimania conference was held in Frankfurt, in 2005, and since then have been held in Cambridge (Massachusetts), Taipei and Alexandria in Egypt.
A local team of volunteers put together a bid that beat competition from cities around world, including Amsterdam, Gdansk and Stockholm.

Wikipedia is now the most popular general reference work on the internet with over 12 million articles - all available under free copyright licenses. [1] [2] There are approximately 2,000 people in the UK who regularly contribute to Wikipedia, and they account for 15% of all Wikipedia contributions. [3] [4]
The Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to encouraging the growth, development and distribution of free, multilingual content, and to providing the full content of these wiki-based projects to the public free of charge. The Foundation is headquartered in California and owns and runs the Wikipedia websites. It also runs eight other projects including a dictionary, a news service, a species directory and an image repository.[5]
Wikimedia UK is an independent non-profit organisation that is recognised by the Wikimedia Foundation as the local chapter supporting the aims of the Foundation. Wikimedia UK is registered in England and Wales under the name Wiki UK Limited and is an exempt charity.[6]
