OXFORD TO HOST GLOBAL WIKIPEDIA CONFERENCE
Hundreds to visit city next summer
Oxford will host a global conference next year bring together hundreds of people who contribute to the Wikipedia family of websites. The "Wikimania" conference is an annual conference focused on how to improve the websites and make them more accessible to potential users.
The first Wikimania conference was held in Frankfurt, in 2005, and since then have been held in Cambridge (Massachusetts), Taipei and Alexandria in Egypt.
A local team of volunteers put together a bid that beat competition from cities around world, including Amsterdam, Gdansk and Stockholm.

Wikipedia is now the most popular general reference work on the internet with over 12 million articles - all available under free copyright licenses. [1] [2] There are approximately 2,000 people in the UK who regularly contribute to Wikipedia, and they account for 15% of all Wikipedia contributions. [3] [4]
The Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit charitable organisation headquartered in California which owns and runs the Wikipedia websites, plus eight other projects including a dictionary, a news service, a species directory and an image repository.
Wikimedia UK is an independent non-profit organisation, registered in England and Wales, to support the Wikimedia projects.
