A one-day, free, hands-on training event for Parkinson's UK staff in improving Wikipedia, arranged in cooperation with Wikimedia UK. Attendees are asked to bring their own laptops and to register a user account on Wikipedia in advance. This is a quick procedure that does not need any detailed personal information; although it is advisable to give an email address, to enable the retrieval of forgotten passwords!

Parkinson's UK expectations are to learn how Wikipedia actually works, what is the etiquette of contributing. Ideally they would like to lean how they can improve Parkinson's related topics, but it's important that their expectations are managed - they need to be aware of the strict requirements surrounding contributing to medical topics.

Attendees

If you have a laptop, please bring it in with you.

It will also help if you create an editing account at Wikipedia before you come in on Thursday. If you haven't yet created an account, please go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page and click 'Create an account' at the top right corner. If you need help you can wait till the workshop.

Here is a provisional list provided from Parkinson's UK. If you have created an account, please email it to me; or if you can write it down below.

  2. Emily Frost - marketing
  3. Claire Bale - research

Information for trainers

For any queries please contact Daria Cybulska (daria.cybulskaatwikimedia.org.uk), 0207 065 0994

  • Expenses will be reimbursed for the trainers - Parkinson's UK is happy to cover your expenses, so you can either let me know in advance, or contact Clare Allen from Parkinson's UK on the day. Lunch is provided by Parkinson's UK.
  • The venue is an external room booked by the charity (and not a meeting room in their office) [2]. If you go by the Tube, once you exit onto the Borough High Street, it's on your right just after The Trinity pub.
    • You will enter on the ground floor, where the reception is located and they will have the list of participants. The receptionist will take everyone onto the first floor where they have the morning tea/coffee. During that time the trainer can go into the second floor where the training room is located (room 'Hercules'), check the set up and get ready - and take the trainees upstairs at the start of the training.
    • It is a room with computers with capacity of 12 trainees. I have asked for it to be set up classroom style. There is space in the front for the lead trainer, with a projector and computer set up.
    • Flip chart and a projector are included.
    • The computers in the room have a wired Internet connection, but the wireless for additional laptops may be unstable.
  • Trainees will be asked to bring a laptop (just in case) and also create a Wikipedia account in advance, but some may not do so. Daria will circulate an email to all participants about a week before the event.
  • There have been issues (also) with the Parkinson's UK page on Wikipedia in the past - something to bear in mind.
