Short check-list of topics for any large grant proposal:

  • Objective
Short abstract of less than 50 words which should help "sell" the idea to board members. Remember to keep the objectives specific and realistic (see SMART criteria).
  • Goals
List of the primary goals of the project.
  • Resources
How much is required for capital costs or expenses and how much paid staff time might be required. Please also estimate the volunteer effort, particularly if specialist experience is needed such as bot programming or managing partnerships with other organizations.
  • Constraints
Any constraint usefully considered for planning purposes. Examles include time constraints (such as the 100th anniversary of World War I), limitations in the availability of key resources or legal constraints such as copyright issues.
  • Outcomes
List of measurable outcomes such as documents, Wikimedia project improvements or less tangible but still measurable outcomes such as increased user engagement. These should deliver the goals.
  • Risks
Main risks that may need planning for. Examples to consider are key volunteer illness, consequences of delays or travel disruption.
