Wikimedia UK relies on it's membership to survive! This is not only through monetary means, but it is our members who will be the driving force behind many of our projects, and it is our members who we aim to serve as the UK Wikimedia Chapter.

But how can we gather more members? How can we encourage people to join an organisation that encourages free, open knowledge? Answers on a postcard, please!

Ideas

  1. Take membership application forms along to Wikimeets / Wiki-events (Wikimania)
  2. Send a message to anyone that's UK-based on their en.wp user talk pages
  3. Encourage people to join who support our goals, not necessarily wiki-people!
  4. Get advertising out (Google Ads? National TV? Walk around [major city] with flyers? Talkpage spam?)
  5. Members-only events (e.g. behind the scenes tours of museums, etc)

What can I do?

  • Add {{WMUK}} to your project userpage
  • Encourage your editing group / non-wiki / wiki friends to join!
  • Get involved with Initiatives! The more active we are, the wider our reach will be!
