Medical Research Council scientists improving Wikipedia

Wikipedia authors (Wikipedians) hold a 'Wikipedia Workshop' to teach Wikipedia's culture to medical researchers.

1 July 2011: Medical scientists and science communicators are meeting in London today to learn how to improve Wikipedia, in a workshop run by Wikimedia UK and the Medical Research Council (MRC).

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, has twenty-two thousand articles on medical topics. Four experienced Wikipedia volunteers are spending the day at the MRC's London headquarters, showing MRC-funded experts how to engage with the site and improve its coverage.

Martin Poulter of Wikimedia UK commented, "Our commitment is to make knowledge freely accessible to everyone on the planet. One particularly important area is medical science, where reliable, factual information can inform and empower our global audience of more than 400 million visitors each month. The involvement of researchers and other qualified experts is crucial."

The 'Wikipedia Workshop' is a bespoke event, tailored to the needs of its host organisation. Attendees learn how to engage with Wikipedia, whether by adding information, correcting mistakes or sharing digital files.
