Wikimedia Commons reaches 6 million files with the upload of 250,000 Geograph images

The last few days have seen the upload of around 250,000 images from the Geograph British Isles Project. One of these—a picture of sailing on Ullswater in the Lake District—became the 6 millionth file on Wikimedia Commons.

Geograph images are all available under a Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license, which means that they can be uploaded onto Wikimedia Commons and reused freely by everyone. These 250,000 files are only the start—Geograph has over 1.6 million freely images from across the UK available. See the Geograph category on Wikimedia Commons for all of the images uploaded so far.

This milestone would have come sooner, but Wikimedia Commons was running out of filespace so mass uploads were halted for a while. The Wikimedia Foundation have just trebled the disk space available, re-enabling mass upload projects. Just in time for the launch of Britain Loves Wikipedia...
