Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)

In the past year, Wikimedia Community Ireland has undertaken a concerted effort to engage more with the Irish speaking community in Ireland and to promote the use of Vicipéid more generally. As well as meeting with and discussing Vicipéid with Irish language organisations and institutions, Vicipéid is beginning to find its place within Irish education. Firstly, this presentation will give an overview of this year of initial outreach with Irish speakers. As Wikimedia Community Ireland lacked active members with a sufficient level of Irish to work with Irish speakers, it was a case of building from the ground up. The second section will explore the experiences of the first use of Vicipéid and the Outreach Dashboard in a third level institution in Ireland. As one of the smaller language Wikipedias, Vicipéid offers a huge opportunity to engage student editors, working either to translate from other languages into Irish, or to create articles with a unique notability to the language. In conclusion, the successes and challenges that have been encountered over the past 12 months will be presented. Some of these were technical, and others relate to the culture of Irish speakers and existing editors. Overall, the presentation will give a case study of a local Wikimedia group beginning to engage with a language group in a more strategic manner.
