<span class="plainlinks">March has raced by, and while April is nearly upon us Wikimedia UK has a [https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Edinburgh_University_Wikipedia:Meetup programme of events] for everyone.</span>


Try to describe Wikipedia to someone who’s never heard of it and they won’t believe you. A free encyclopedia to which anyone can contribute, which is actually useful? But you’ve never likely to have that conversation anyway; with more than 6 billion page views a month, Wikipedia is the fifth most popular website – and an amazing resource for the sharing of knowledge on a global scale.
<span class="plainlinks">The month kicks off with a [https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Edinburgh_University_Wikipedia:Meetup Wiki Hour of Power] at the University of Edinburgh students, staff, and academics are invited to spend their lunch hour editing Wikipedia. It’s a monthly event, and the last one coincided with International Women’s Day.</span>


Wikipedia is a work in progress, and dance is one of the areas that needs improvement. At the Royal Opera House we’re passionate about sharing our love of ballet and opera with the world – and Wikipedia is one of the best ways to do that. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Wikimedia UK to host a number of ‘editathons’ – focussed sessions to improve particular articles. In our previous editathons – on [http://www.roh.org.uk/news/editathon-offers-a-chance-to-improve-ballet%E2%80%A8-entries-on-wikipedia Ashton] and [http://www.roh.org.uk/news/roh-editathon-improving-wikipedias-entries-on-dance MacMillan] – we opened the invitation to everyone. But this time we turned our attention to the [http://www.roh.org.uk/for/rohstudents/the-ambassadors ROH Student Ambassadors].
<span class="plainlinks">Editathons are a great way to get together with other people to improve Wikipedia as a team and learn how to edit. So there are events at the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Mathematics/Lancaster_University_Edit-a-thon_8_April_2015 University of Lancaster], the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jason.nlw/Welsh_Photographers_Editathon National Library of Wales] (not once [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jason.nlw/WWI_Gallipoli_Edit-a-thon but twice!]), and the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetups/UK/National_Maritime_Museum_April_2015 National Maritime Museum] in Greenwich.</span>


The ROH Student Ambassadors are selected from the ROH Students scheme to be passionate advocates for the work of the Royal Opera House within their respective universities. They’re passionate, creative and confident, and share our love for opera and ballet. We invited them to an evening performance of ''[http://www.roh.org.uk/productions/swan-lake-by-anthony-dowell Swan Lake]'', and in the afternoon set them to work on editing Wikipedia on a subject of their choice. Joining us were experienced Wikipedians [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Tim_riley Tim Riley] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jonathan_Cardy_(WMUK) Jonathan Cardy], who provided invaluable insight into the ins and outs of editing.
<span class="plainlinks">There are five meetups scheduled this month across Leeds (12th April), London (12th April), Oxford (19th April), Edinburgh (22 April), and Manchester (26 April). Most take place on the weekends, except for the one in Edinburgh which is on a Wednesday. It’s an opportunity to meet other Wikimedians. There is a full [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/UK/Footer_list list of upcoming meetups] so you can find one near you, and if there isn’t one perhaps it’s time to start one yourself!</span>

<span class="plainlinks">For those of you with a GLAMorous side, GLAM-Wiki 2015 organised by Wikimedia Netherlands takes place in The Hague in the middle of the month. Closer to home the [https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/GLAM_Committee_Agenda_2015-04-21 GLAM Committee] will be discussing all things related to Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums on 21 April. Join the conversation to learn about what the charity does in this area.</span>
 
<span class="plainlinks">On top of all that there is [https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/GLAM_Toolset_training_April_2015 training available for the GLAM upload tool], helping you get to grips with mass uploads. The tool underpins some of the charity’s fantastic work, such as uploads from the National Library of Scotland (look, [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jacobite_broadside_-_Carlisle_Castle_02.jpg here’s a castle]). Two dates are available, but if you’re interested and can make either session leave a note at the foot of the page.</span>

About Wikimedia UK

The Wikimedia projects are special: they are written and curated by thousands of volunteers. They are also supported by voluntary donations, through Wikimedia UK, the Wikimedia Foundation and other international chapters.

Wikimedia UK is a charity registered in England and Wales that supports and promotes Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons. Our mission is to help people and organisations create and preserve open knowledge, and to help provide easy access for all. We do this by supporting volunteer editors and contributors ('Wikimedians'), by working in partnership with cultural and educational institutions, by hosting training sessions and editing events, and by acting to advocate the benefits of open knowledge generally.

There are several ways to get involved in the charity's work. You can become a member for just £5 per year. You can volunteer to work with us in a variety of ways, both online and offline.
