I’ve had two recent uploads of images released by organizations where I am Wikimedian in Residence. Neither of them are huge in quantity compared to some uploads, but I’m really pleased that an unusually large percentage of them are already used in articles. Many thanks to all the editors who put them in articles, especially [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Keilana Keilana] for CRUK and [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Duncan.Hull Duncan.Hull] for the Royal Society images.
I’m pleased to announce that I have accepted the position of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedian_in_residence Wikimedian in Residence] with the [http://www.rsc.org/ Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)], a learned society and professional body whose roots go back to 1841 ([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Society_of_Chemistry see RSC on Wikipedia]).

The first release was by [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancer_Research_UK Cancer Research UK] (CRUK), of [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Cancer_Research_UK 390 cancer-related diagrams], including many covering anatomy and cell biology. Many medical editors had said they were keen to have these available, and they have been quickly added to many articles, with 190 already being used, some twice, and mostly on high-traffic medical articles like [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breast_cancer breast cancer], [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lung_cancer lung cancer] and [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cervical_cancer cervical cancer].
Over the next year, starting 22 September, I will be helping my new RSC colleagues, and the Society’s members, to understand Wikipedia and its [https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Our_projects sister projects], and to contribute to making knowledge of chemistry, and related subjects, more freely available. The job is titled “WikiMedian”, because as well as WikiPedia, it covers those other projects, which are run by the Wikimedia community.

Wikipedia cancer articles tend to be mostly illustrated with alarming shots of tumours, or purple-stained pathology slides which convey little to non-professional readers. The new images are from the patient information pages on CRUK’s website and explain in simple terms basic aspects of the main cancers – where they arise, how they grow and spread. Some show surgical procedures that are hard to convey in prose.
This follows on from my previous Wikipedia residences with Wildscreen ([https://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/ARKive_project on their ARKive project]), with [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/SAHS Staffordshire Archives and Heritage Service], at the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/NAGW New Art Gallery Walsall], and with Lancashire County Council’s Museum Service (at their [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/QSMM Queen Street Mill]), plus shorter projects with a number of other institutions (including West Midlands Police, The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Black Country Museum, and more). I’ll continue to be [http://orcid.org/blog/2014/06/04/announcing-orcid%E2%80%99s-wikipedian-residence Wikipedian in Residence at ORCID]. The RSC have [http://orcid.org/organizations/integrators/current already integrated ORCID] into their publishing workflow and the two organisations obviously share interests in research and academic publishing. <span class="plainlinks">[https://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2014/09/wikimedian-in-residence-at-the-royal-society-of-chemistry/<nowiki>[</nowiki>Read the full post here...<nowiki>]</nowiki>]</span>

Many files have generous labelling inside the image. All the files are in svg format, allowing for easy translation of these labels into other languages, which should be especially useful over time. <span class="plainlinks">[https://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2014/09/new-images-released-are-quickly-put-to-use/<nowiki>[</nowiki>Read the full post here...<nowiki>]</nowiki>]</span>

Wikimedia UK

Open knowledge for all

Our website

If you'd like to see what Wikimedia UK is working on, our website is the best place for our community of volunteers, donors and members to stay up to date.

About Wikimedia UK

The Wikimedia projects are special: they are written and curated by thousands of volunteers. They are also supported by voluntary donations, through Wikimedia UK, the Wikimedia Foundation and other international chapters.

Wikimedia UK is a charity registered in England and Wales that supports and promotes Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons. Our mission is to help people and organisations create and preserve open knowledge, and to help provide easy access for all. We do this by supporting volunteer editors and contributors ('Wikimedians'), by working in partnership with cultural and educational institutions, by hosting training sessions and editing events, and by acting to advocate the benefits of open knowledge generally.

There are several ways to get involved in the charity's work. You can become a member for just £5 per year. You can volunteer to work with us in a variety of ways, both online and offline. You can also make a donation (and if you're a UK taxpayer, we can claim Gift Aid). Subscribe to our Friends' Newsletter to stay in touch. Click the buttons below to learn more.
