Where and when

The workshop will take place on the weekend of 1—2 February 2014 in Cardiff, and it will be run by a professional consultant. This session is targeted at volunteers in Wales and the immediate surrounding areas. We are especially interested in editors of Wicipedia Cymraeg who work through the Welsh language. However, both English and Welsh language editors on all Wikimedia projects will be welcomed. The workshop itself will be delivered in English.

The timings of the event are: Saturday 9:30am — 6:30pm, Sunday 9am — 5pm. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided; we are also planning a social dinner after the training on Saturday. It is vital that you do not miss the start of the training session, so before confirming your availability please do make sure you can make the start time of the training. We are able to cover travel and accommodation, including if you need to travel on Friday - an advance notice will be appreciated.

The event is open to Wikimedia UK volunteers who can make a credible commitment to support training in future: it will be a strong advantage to have already been involved in other training events. If your interest is in training people to contribute to a sister project such as Commons or Wikinews, rather than to Wikipedia, that's no disadvantage.

Aims

We know that some of our members are already delivering professional-quality training. They may think they don't need this weekend event, but it's especially important for them to sign up. It's a chance for you to:

• Get accredited and receive detailed feedback about your presenting and training skills
• Get general trainer skills which you can then apply when delivering specific Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons workshops etc.
• Share your skills with others
• Develop the ability to help design a training programme that serves Wikimedia UK in the long term

Places are limited to make sure that each participant gets individual attention and feedback, so please sign up below to express your interest.

Course details

The course focuses on enabling the participants to develop and deliver high quality training which draws on their own skills and expertise. You can then apply these skills whenever you run a training session. Note that this is about training, not presenting, so we will not be focusing on developing content of presentations on e.g. Wikipedia.

By the end of the course the participants will be able to:

• Set training objectives and structure a session with appropriate material to meet those objectives
• Present information clearly to different audiences and use visual aids effectively
• Identify ways to make the sessions interactive and participative and deal with questions

As a part of the course you will also be receiving an hour long 1-1 telephone feedback. This provides the opportunity to discuss your performance and reactions to the course privately. It promotes intense reflection and rounded learning.

The participants will also be able to:

• Recognise the importance of diversity in the training context
• Respond appropriately to the needs of volunteer trainers
• Understand the impact of different learning and communication styles when designing and delivering training
• Use active listening to guide their interaction with participants
• Give effective and appropriate feedback to other participants

1. I'm interested in taking on this role & attending this event (I live near Bristol). On wiki I have nearly 9 years experience, 65,000 edits (including contributing to FAs FLs FPs etc) and created and coordinate a WikiProject. Recent work has included contributions to WLM. I presented at Bristol Wiki Academy 1. Off wiki I have an MA in Education & have worked for 25 years as a clinical teacher, lecturer etc in the NHS & Higher Education. 2. Unfortunately, I missed previous events. However, I'm able to attend this one! Thanks for proposing this location. I'm still involved in recruiting others to edit, in connection with a WikiProject. Attending this training course would help me make the most of future events targeting potential editors. I'm in Bristol, so will be able to travel across to Cardiff on the Saturday morning. If there are accommodation places available for the Saturday night, I'd be interested in staying over in order to make the most of informal discussions with others. This could also result in a more productive outcome on Sunday, because I wouldn't lose 2-3 hours travelling home and back during the course. Thanks. -- Trevj (talk) 12:13, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

3. Hello, Yes I would be interested, sorry its taken me a little while to get back to you. I think I might be able to stay with a friend on the friday and saturday night so hopefully no accomodation costs but I would definitely need travel expenses if that would still be okay? 4. I am interested in this event, but I can't confirm my availability in February yet (possibly wont be able to until early January). I've been involved with Wikipedia and sister projects since December 2004 and have contributed in various ways pretty much continuously since then, including helping at the NRM editathon and I'll also be assisting at the Mining Institute in Newcastle editathon next month. I have extensive experience of assisting new users of various ages with various different computer packages on an informal basis dating back to at least the early-mid 1990s. 7. I'd like to attend. I'm based in Bath, so not too far to travel, although I'd like to stay over for informal discussion with others on the Friday night. I've been a Wikipedia user since 2004. Over the past year I've started to run Wikipedia editing events and will be running a session for University Librarians in April. That will include training them on how to train staff and students on use of Wikipedia. Accommodation

Wikimedia UK will arrange and pay for accommodation close to the venue for those that need it. If you do require accommodation, please make Wikimedia UK aware of this in advance (if you haven't done so already).

Facilities

The training will take place in a room arranged in a classroom layout. There will be two flipcharts with pens, a screen, and a projector will be in the room. Refreshments will be provided. There will be free WiFi.
