Discuss the migration here...

mw:Extension:MediaWikiAuth

Randomly stumbled on the site and saw the sitenotice. Have you looked into using mw:Extension:MediaWikiAuth to automatically migrate accounts, preferences, watchlists? Legoktm (talk) 09:14, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi Legoktm. It looks like the extension is in beta and not much activity has been tracked on the git... That's why I felt unconfortable with it. Do you know more about the stability/robustness of this extension? You have maybe a few example of successful migrations using it? Kelson (talk) 12:48, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
We used it for the en.uncyclopedia.co migration off of Wikia. It does require a core patch, but it works pretty well. Legoktm (talk) 05:03, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
Everything about this was a little bit too late and untested regarding our migration agenda... Kelson (talk) 11:19, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

New domain name

"www.wikimedia.org.uk"? one would hope that "wikimedia.org.uk" will also work (typing those four extra characters is soul-destroying ;-P ) --AlisonW (talk) 17:16, 27 September 2013 (UTC) ps. good luck.

"wikimedia.org.uk" should redirect to "wiki.wikimedia.org.uk", and AFAIK this works. Kelson (talk) 18:42, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

SSL

Should login'd user default to SSL connection in a similar way as on WMF wiki? -- KTC (talk) 20:36, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

I prefer myself. SSL is now forced like before. Kelson (talk) 11:17, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

Redirection from old URLs to new URLs

When will uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/whatever start redirecting to wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/whatever ? Thanks. --Toni Sant (WMUK) (talk) 12:21, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Toni. Having a redirection would be nice for most of the users. The problem is: if we switch, users who still don't have got their password per email will be stuck. For this reason, we should IMO wait many monthes, maybe a year, before shutting done completly uk.wikimedia.org and put a redirection. Kelson (talk) 07:18, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
If it's possible to access the old wiki under a new URL, and then redirect uk.wikimedia.org ? -- Katie Chan (WMUK) (talk) 09:08, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
Sounds a good idea, I have asked the WMF if something like that is easy to do. Kelson (talk) 15:58, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
That's a brilliant idea, Katie! we really need to have the old published URLs to start redirecting to the new URLs sooner rather than later. Thanks. --Toni Sant (WMUK) (talk) 16:26, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

wikiwikiwiki

Hello. We now seem to have three 'wiki's in the URL for this site, which seems a bit excessive. Having two would seem better to me, and would bring the number of 'wiki's in line with the Wiki Wiki Bus, WikiWikiWeb, Wikipedia ( + /wiki/) etc.. Could we move it to (www.)wikimedia.org.uk (+ /wiki/) instead please? That would also make it clearer that this is WMUK's main site, rather than a subcomponent of it. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:18, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Mike. I'm personally happy with the current redirection, although I see no problem to change the name of the wiki to www.wikimedia.org.uk. But, what should be behind www.wikimedia.org.uk seems to be a pretty open and well discussed question currently (we should maybe have something different than the wiki). So, if you could get a broader support within WMUK tech committee, I would fell myself more comfortable with the change you propose. Kelson (talk) 15:57, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
What Mike suggests is in line with other Wikis...and seems more sensible Sjgknight (talk) 16:27, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
If we do change the main URL/subdomain, please make sure that the appropriate auto-redirect is in place so we don't find ourself with bad URLs again in the space of a few days. Sorry to harp on about this but is has added unnecessary complications to preparations for EduWiki, for example. Thanks. --Toni Sant (WMUK) (talk) 16:31, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
