As Wembley is to football and CERN is to particle physics, so the [http://www.roh.org.uk/ Royal Opera House] in London is to ballet. Home to both The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet, the opera house is located in London’s Covent Garden. So it’s with great excitement that Wikimedia UK is supporting a ballet-themed editathon at this world-famous venue on Saturday 22 June.
The [http://www.bl.uk/ British Library] are further demonstrating their commitment to open knowledge later this month as they host a First World War editathon on 29 June.

The focus of the event is [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Ashton Sir Frederick Ashton], The Royal Ballet’s founding choreographer and one of the most prominent figures in 20th century ballet. The Wikipedia article about him exists in 14 languages but is somewhat neglected, while only around 15% of his ballets have articles at all.
What will make this session so useful is the Library is making some of its material from the [http://www.europeana.eu/ Europeana] Collections 1914-1918 project publicly available. These collections, for the most part, are not yet online but a substantial number will be made available the day before the event.

The Royal Opera House will be sharing lots of books and other materials to use as sources and there are still some places available at the event.
Many of these sources are extremely hard to find. These include many out of print books, official and unofficial trench journals, maps and photographs.

The editathon is being organised by Rose Vickridge of the Royal Opera House and Andrew Gray, an experienced Wikimedian.
Spaces remain available for this free event and you're most welcome to attend what should be a very interesting day. You can find [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/British_Library/WWI more information and register your attendance here]. <span class="plainlinks">[http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2013/06/british-library-to-make-europeana-wwi-collection-available-at-workshop/ <nowiki>[</nowiki>...<nowiki>]</nowiki>]</span>

Open knowledge for all

Wikimedia UK is hiring – We are now accepting applications for a Membership, Fundraising and Operations Assistant

Our website

If you'd like to see what Wikimedia UK is working on, our website is the best place for our community of volunteers, donors and members to stay up to date.

About Wikimedia UK

The Wikimedia projects are special: they are written and curated by thousands of volunteers. They are also supported by voluntary donations, through Wikimedia UK, the Wikimedia Foundation and other international chapters.

Wikimedia UK is a charity registered in England and Wales that supports and promotes Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons. Our mission is to help people and organisations create and preserve open knowledge, and to help provide easy access for all. We do this by supporting volunteer editors and contributors ('Wikimedians'), by working in partnership with cultural and educational institutions, by hosting training sessions and editing events, and by acting to advocate the benefits of open knowledge generally.

There are several ways to get involved in the charity's work. You can become a member for just £5 per year. You can volunteer to work with us in a variety of ways, both online and offline. You can also make a donation (and if you're a UK taxpayer, we can claim Gift Aid). Subscribe to our Friends' Newsletter to stay in touch. Click the buttons below to learn more.
