On Saturday I spoke in Lincoln at the [[WikiConference UK 2013|WikimediaUK Conference]] on Mediawiki for OER and Learning Analytics – [http://www.slideshare.net/sjgknight/media-wiki-for-oer-and-learning-analytics-understanding-learning-resources-and-learners?ref=http://people.kmi.open.ac.uk/knight/2013/06/wmuk-conference-mediawiki-for-oer-and-learning-analytics/ slides (with audio) here], video (I think) available on the conference link some time later this week.

I’d met a group of the people last year at [[EduWiki Conference 2012|EduWiki 2012]] (and my thoughts at: [http://www.nominettrust.org.uk/knowledge-centre/blogs/wikipedia-education-and-tracking-how-knowledge-used EduWiki 2012]), and my talk built a lot on the work I did at Cambridge on the [http://orbit.educ.cam.ac.uk/wiki/Home ORBIT] project creating a platform for OER on interactive teaching particularly in STEM subject, as well as more recent work related to my PhD. In particular I was talking about some stuff I’ve covered in blogs on:
‘This book, Mamma gave me, that I might write the journal of my journey to Wales in it.’ So began the young Victoria in 1832, beginning a lifelong habit and providing fodder for researchers around the world.

As Communications and Social Media Officer for the [http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/ Bodleian Libraries], it was my job to find ways to get the word out and help our audiences engage with the [http://www.queenvictoriasjournals.org/ Queen Victoria’s Journals project]. The project, a collaborative effort between the Bodleian Libraries, the [http://www.royal.gov.uk/the%20royal%20collection%20and%20other%20collections/theroyalarchives/theroyalarchives.aspx Royal Archives] and information  company [http://www.proquest.co.uk/en-UK/ ProQuest], has made Queen Victoria’s diaries available online.

*[http://people.kmi.open.ac.uk/knight/2013/05/collaborative-information-seeking-on-wikipedia-talk-pages/ Collaborative information seeking on talk pages] (I didn’t really mention this in the talk, but it was something I chatted to people about over the weekend)
I was particularly happy to hear talks from education organiser [http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2013/03/toni-sant-joins-wikimedia-uk-as-education-organiser/ Toni Sant], WMUK Associate (and a big contributor to education outreach) [[User:MartinPoulter|Martin Poulter]], and communications organiser (and someone I’ve talked to a bit about [http://www.digitaldisruption.co.uk/about/ Digital Disruption's] work) [[User:Stevie Benton (WMUK)|Stevie Benton]].

I’ve put some thoughts below on particular aspects of the event, in the long run I think there are some interesting questions around how wikimedia meets its targets (and what those are), one thing I was thinking about yesterday was whether we need to start thinking about the mediawiki platform as a classroom tool in the same way as google has pushed google docs – it’s a good way to encourage brand affiliation, and familiarise people with your tools (and get them off microsoft’s – who of course do exactly the same thing). '''It may be that tools like mediawiki – particularly given that they are open source, very flexible, and allow a lot of interesting pedagogic and analytic things to happen, might be particularly amenable to the sort of ‘technology for pedagogy' things I talked about not so long ago.''' <span class="plainlinks">[http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2013/06/wmuk-conference-mediawiki-for-oer-and-learning-analytics/ <nowiki>[</nowiki>Continues ...<nowiki>]</nowiki>]</span>
The Bodleian Libraries communications team had already begun to consider how we might create stronger links with the Wikipedia community – we’ve been chatting to Wikipedians in Residence and working with local editors to improve collection-related content. Engaging with the Wikipedia community seemed like a great way to put the Journals material to use as well as to help us develop relationships with Wikipedians in the area, and we decided to run a [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_University_of_Oxford/%20QueenVictoriasJournals Queen Victoria’s Journals editathon] to coincide with the anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birthday on 24 May.

The project’s timing meant that we had a very short window in which to organise an event, but we went ahead. We quickly pulled together some promotional material and got curators lined up for the day, then spent about two and half weeks promoting the event. The help of Wikimedia UK was crucial in getting the word out and making sure everything was set up correctly, but we also advertised within the University and to various Victorian research groups. <span class="plainlinks">[http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2013/06/one-is-most-amused-queen-victorias-journals-editathon/ <nowiki>[</nowiki>Continues ...<nowiki>]</nowiki>]</span>

Open knowledge for all

Wikimedia UK is hiring – We are now accepting applications for a Membership, Fundraising and Operations Assistant

Our website

If you'd like to see what Wikimedia UK is working on, our website is the best place for our community of volunteers, donors and members to stay up to date.

About Wikimedia UK

The Wikimedia projects are special: they are written and curated by thousands of volunteers. They are also supported by voluntary donations, through Wikimedia UK, the Wikimedia Foundation and other international chapters.

Wikimedia UK is a charity registered in England and Wales that supports and promotes Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons. Our mission is to help people and organisations create and preserve open knowledge, and to help provide easy access for all. We do this by supporting volunteer editors and contributors ('Wikimedians'), by working in partnership with cultural and educational institutions, by hosting training sessions and editing events, and by acting to advocate the benefits of open knowledge generally.

There are several ways to get involved in the charity's work. You can become a member for just £5 per year. You can volunteer to work with us in a variety of ways, both online and offline. You can also make a donation (and if you're a UK taxpayer, we can claim Gift Aid). Subscribe to our Friends' Newsletter to stay in touch. Click the buttons below to learn more.
