Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales showed his support for Wikimedia UK on Tuesday night at an event in central London.
Wikimedia UK is excited to announce that Toni Sant is joining our team as our Eduction Organiser. Toni will be starting work during the week beginning 18 March. Toni is already known among active Wikimedians in the UK as well as globally as he has been active with Wikipedia education programmes for the past couple of years.  Below Toni introduces himself in his own words. We’re sure you’ll join us in extending him a warm welcome.

Speaking at the TechHub Campus to a group of journalists, Wikimedians and tech start-ups, Jimmy spoke of the work that the Chapter is doing in areas such as education and culture. He also praised the efforts of all of the volunteers that make these projects possible.
“Hello fellow Wikimedians, I’m Toni Sant. I have long been an admirer of the global Wikimedia movement and have integrated work from my teaching in Higher Education with the English Wikipedia.

Among the topics Jimmy spoke about was Wikimedia UK’s place within the global movement, our work to increase participation and diversity on Wikimedia projects and our efforts in education such as [[EduWiki]].
“I am currently also employed at the University of Hull’s Scarborough Campus as Director of Research in the School of Arts and New Media, where I’ve been based since 2004. I have been a teacher or lecturer at different education levels since 1993. For the last three academic years I have integrated a Wikipedia assessment in my undergraduate university teaching for all my students and I have also introduced other teaching colleagues to adopt Wikipedia as a resource for some of their assignments. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zw4k1VELrcc You can view a presentation I gave at EduWiki about some of this work here].

Wikimedia UK volunteers and staff were on hand at the event to speak with journalists and local tech businesses about Wikimedia projects and the active role that Wikimedia UK takes within the community.
“I came to know many other Wikimedians in person by attending the WikiConference in Mumbai, India in 2011, through a scholarship from WMUK. I have also attended a number of other events such as WikiMania 2012 in Washington DC, the EduWiki Conference in Leicester and GLAMcamp at the British Library in London.  At these events I have met many of the amazing volunteers that make all the Wikimedia projects possible.

The event was generously hosted by the [http://london.techhub.com/ TechHub Campus], who donated the event space for free. “I will be based in Scarborough but plan to be at the WMUK office in London as frequently as possible. The are a number of things I’ll be working on in terms of Education at WMUK, but the two main things that will very likely take up most of my time in the first few months will be the Wikimedian-in-Residence programme within a UK university, and this year’s EduWiki Conference. I will be at our open day on 23 March and look forward to meeting Wikimedians face-to-face, particularly anyone interested in Education issues within the context of Wikimedia.” <span class="plainlinks">[http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2013/03/toni-sant-joins-wikimedia-uk-as-education-organiser/ <nowiki>[</nowiki>...<nowiki>]</nowiki>]</span>

Open knowledge for all

Wikimedia UK is hiring – We are now accepting applications for a Membership, Fundraising and Operations Assistant

Our website

If you'd like to see what Wikimedia UK is working on, our website is the best place for our community of volunteers, donors and members to stay up to date.

About Wikimedia UK

The Wikimedia projects are special: they are written and curated by thousands of volunteers. They are also supported by voluntary donations, through Wikimedia UK, the Wikimedia Foundation and other international chapters.

Wikimedia UK is a charity registered in England and Wales that supports and promotes Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons. Our mission is to help people and organisations create and preserve open knowledge, and to help provide easy access for all. We do this by supporting volunteer editors and contributors ('Wikimedians'), by working in partnership with cultural and educational institutions, by hosting training sessions and editing events, and by acting to advocate the benefits of open knowledge generally.

There are several ways to get involved in the charity's work. You can become a member for just £5 per year. You can volunteer to work with us in a variety of ways, both online and offline. You can also make a donation (and if you're a UK taxpayer, we can claim Gift Aid). Subscribe to our Friends' Newsletter to stay in touch. Click the buttons below to learn more.
