;Wikimedia UK and Wikimedia Foundation appoint independent reviewer
;The story of Ada Lovelace, the Royal Society and Wikimedia UK

Today Wikimedia UK and the Wikimedia Foundation are announcing the appointment of [http://www.compasspartnership.co.uk/ Compass Partnership] to produce the review and report on the governance of Wikimedia UK. The governance review was announced on September 28, 2012 in a [http://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/09/28/joint-statement-from-wikimedia-foundation-and-wikimedia-uk/ joint statement] by Wikimedia UK and the Wikimedia Foundation. The legal teams at Wikimedia UK and the Wikimedia Foundation made suggestions for potential parties to conduct the review. A shortlist of two was drawn up, from which Compass Partnership was jointly selected.

The imagination of the Wikimedia UK community was first ignited by the idea of the Ada Lovelace Day in May 2012. When we found out about it, we immediately decided we had to get involved. [http://findingada.com/ Ada Lovelace Day] is about sharing stories about women in science that inspired you. However, if a female scientist does not have an article on Wikipedia often it’s difficult to learn about her – hence she cannot serve as a role model for others. So, the idea is to spread the stories about them, and at the same time inspire more women to get involved, not only with Wikipedia, but in maths, science, technology and engineering.

The review will be led by [http://www.compasspartnership.co.uk/people/p_details.php?id=1 Mike Hudson] who is an independent specialist consultant with an outstanding reputation in the UK charitable sector. Mike will work with [http://www.compasspartnership.co.uk/people/p_details.php?id=3 Keith Smith], who also has decades of experience as a manager, trustee and consultant in the sector, together with a research assistant.
This is one of the issues we wanted to approach with this event – the other is the fact that, proportionally, there aren’t many female editors on Wikipedia. For more background on this you can read a [http://suegardner.org/2011/02/19/nine-reasons-why-women-dont-edit-wikipedia-in-their-own-words/ blog] from Sue Gardner, Executive Director. By promoting the idea of the Ada Lovelace Day we wanted to take a step in changing this situation. We were able to share that inspiration with the Royal Society in London, who agreed to partner with us for an [[Ada Lovelace Day 2012|event on 19 October]]. This was an ideal match as not only does the Royal Society have a wonderful [http://royalsociety.org/library/ library]], but is also maintaining a network of ‘women in science’. The Society’s library holds a rich collection of printed works about women in science, including biographies and works authored by scientists, which we made great use of during the event.

The review will establish a full account of the recent events related to QRpedia, Monmouthpedia, Gibraltarpedia and related conflicts of interest. It will also aim to answer specific questions that arise on these topics.  The review will also consider Wikimedia UK’s current governance arrangements, including internal policies such as the [[Trustee_Code_of_Conduct|Trustee Code of Conduct]], [[Conflicts_of_interest_policy|Conflicts of interest policy]], [[Representing_Wikimedia_UK|Representing Wikimedia UK policy]], and any other relevant policies of Wikimedia UK, in the light of external requirements and guidance and best ethical practices. These will include the Charity Commission guidance on [http://www.charity-commission.gov.uk/Charity_requirements_guidance/Charity_governance/Good_governance/conflicts.aspx#8 Conflicts of interest for charity trustees], and the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committee_on_Standards_in_Public_Life#First_report Nolan Committee Principles]. <span class="plainlinks">[http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2012/10/wikimedia-uk-and-wikimedia-foundation-appoint-independent-reviewer/ <nowiki>[</nowiki>...<nowiki>]</nowiki>]</span>
I was aware that a lot is being done within the movement to increase female participation, but during the course of working on the event I have realised quite how much enthusiasm and collaboration there is to get women editing. Linking up with the Finding Ada movement has been very inspiring too, and we are now connected to many more women that want to support Wikipedia. <span class="plainlinks">[http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2012/10/the-story-of-ada-lovelace-the-royal-society-and-wikimedia-uk/ <nowiki>[</nowiki>...<nowiki>]</nowiki>]</span>

Wikimedia UK

Open knowledge for all

Our website

If you'd like to see what Wikimedia UK is working on, our website is the best place for our community of volunteers, donors and members to stay up to date.

About Wikimedia UK

The Wikimedia projects are special: they are written and curated by thousands of volunteers. They are also supported by voluntary donations, through Wikimedia UK, the Wikimedia Foundation and other international chapters.

Wikimedia UK is a charity registered in England and Wales that supports and promotes Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons. Our mission is to help people and organisations create and preserve open knowledge, and to help provide easy access for all. We do this by supporting volunteer editors and contributors ('Wikimedians'), by working in partnership with cultural and educational institutions, by hosting training sessions and editing events, and by acting to advocate the benefits of open knowledge generally.

There are several ways to get involved in the charity's work. You can become a member for just £5 per year. You can volunteer to work with us in a variety of ways, both online and offline. You can also make a donation (and if you're a UK taxpayer, we can claim Gift Aid). Subscribe to our Friends' Newsletter to stay in touch. Click the buttons below to learn more.
