GLAM momentum

In June the British Museum was the first organization to run a "Wikipedian-in-residence" program by taking Liam Wyatt in-house. A free backstage pass tour for Wikipedians was followed up by the "Hoxne challenge" where a team of volunteer Wikipedia editors were hosted for a day by the museum to collaborate with curators and experts. The Hoxne Hoard article gained Featured Article status a few days later. Other events included Feature Article prizes, a school translations project (to translate lead sections of BM articles into French) and one-to-one on-site collaborations with the Asia and Prints departments.
The ongoing enthusiasm of long term contributors to GLAM/BM has seen:
- a growth in British Museum-related articles from 148 to 255, all of the new articles being a higher quality
- a rise in overall quality with articles being re-written, photographs add to Commons and direct links to the new BM online object database added
- four articles getting to be Today's Featured Article on the main page of Wikipedia each resulting in 47,000 to 100,000 views in one day
- over 50 main page Did you knows on BM-related articles
With the British Museum as model, similar programs have been run at the Smithsonian Institution and the Children's Museum of Indianapolis.
The first GLAM-WIKI conference was hosted in November by the British Museum with presentations and representation from a number of institutions including the National Portrait Gallery, Natural History Museum and National Maritime Museum. Several organizations are open to collaboration and some have asked for specific help with how to take the next step in collaborating with Wikipedians.

Wikipedian of the Year?
My contender for wikipedian of the year is a person who has just tried to write his first wiki-article. He is one of the many managers who look after our cultural heritage in one of Britains oldest institutions. He is meant to ensure that the contents of the U.K.s oldest museum are safe and secure. As the web manager he is especially responsible that the organisations rules on intellectual property rights are upheld. Managers in Britain's museums hope a generous pension awaits those who are "a safe pair of hands" until their retirement date.
Matthew Cock agreed to meet two representatives from Wikimedia UK and was propositioned by an ambitious Australian in the canteen queue. Normally outrageous ideas should be trialled elsewhere, but he championed the idea that the British Museum would take on a "Wikipedia in Residence". He was as surprised as the invitees to find that the idea was welcomed. Together they organised a "backstage pass tour" and offered strangers a chance to see the treasures that are usually hidden behind closed doors.

On the tour Liam Wyatt requested that someone write an article on a Frieze. Within days of the tour there was the first of 50 DYK articles and numerous "Good Articles" in progress. Five £100 pound book vouchers were offered to the first new Featured article and only one of the winners was in English! Boxing day saw the fourth of "Today's Featured Article" about a British Museum artefact. The picture in that article was taken on one of these tours and it was seen by 3,800,000 people. Not many museums can say that about their annual viewing figures.
