The National Liberal Club, London

British liberal history edit-a-thon - details

Wikimedia UK's participation policy will apply at the event and there will be trusted individuals on hand with whom you can raise any related issues.

About the event

There will be experienced editors on hand to help beginners

The National Liberal Club houses a library of books and specialist materials on Liberal history, many of them rare. They have kindly agreed to open up their collection to Wikipedia editors for the day, to improve articles related to the history of British liberalism. All those interested in British political history are welcome to attend—you do not need to have edited Wikipedia before! Trainers will be on hand to help you with getting started editing Wikipedia, and begin contributing.

How do I prepare?

Schedule

The event will run from 10 AM–6PM; you can drop in, or join us for the whole day. Lunch will be provided.

Dress Code

As a private members' club, the NLC has a fairly strict dress code (details below); but you don't need to adhere to it if you just want to come to the event in the Lloyd George Room.

Having said that, the NLC say that they will happily show Wikipedia editors around the club throughout the day, as a "thank you" for their work; but that this is only possible if people have adhered to the dress code. So you're very welcome to the event, whether or not you're dressed up for the day; but you'll need to be appropriately dressed if you want to take a look around the rest of the club.

Dress code: Jacket and tie for men, formal wear for women; no jeans, trainers, shorts, t-shirts, or tracksuits.

About the venue

The National Liberal Club was established by William Gladstone in 1882. Today, it is independent of any political party but remains closely aligned with the Liberal tradition. Its members may belong to any political party or none. The neo-Gothic building, designed by Alfred Waterhouse (who was also architect of the Natural History Museum, and Manchester Town Hall), was completed in 1887 and was at the time the largest clubhouse ever built. Some of the building has since been sold off, but it remains among the largest clubhouses in the world. Learn more about the National Liberal Club and its history on Wikipedia.
