In November Creative Commons [https://creativecommons.org/weblog/entry/40768 released] version 4.0 of the Creative Commons license suite, and today the [http://opendefinition.org/advisory-council/ Open Definition Advisory Council] approved the CC 4.0 [https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Attribution (BY)] and [https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/ Attribution-ShareAlike (BY-SA)] International licenses as conformant with the Open Definition.
[http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/ Cancer Research UK] is to recruit its very own ‘Wikipedian in Residence’ to help ensure the free online encyclopaedia Wikipedia has the most up to date and accurate information on cancer, today (Thursday).


The Open Definition sets out principles that define “openness” in relation to data and content…It can be summed up in the statement that: “A piece of data or content is open if anyone is free to use, reuse, and redistribute it — subject only, at most, to the requirement to attribute and/or share-alike.”
The exciting new role will include teaching Cancer Research UK’s scientists to edit the website as well as researching how cancer patients use the site to access information and helping to make information on its pages as easy as possible to understand. They will also support Wikipedians already editing its cancer science pages.


Prior versions of Creative Commons BY and BY-SA licenses (1.0 – 3.0, including jurisdiction ports) are also aligned with the Open Definition, as is the [https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/ CC0 Public Domain Dedication]. Here’s the [http://opendefinition.org/licenses/ complete list] of conformant licenses. None of the Creative Commons NonCommercial or NoDerivatives licenses comply with the Definition.
Funded by the [http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/ Wellcome Trust] and supported by Wikimedia UK, the new in-house Wikipedian role will be the first of its kind to be created by a medical research organisation. It is hoped that the project could act as an exemplar for other areas of medical research – ensuring that medical experts are working closely with Wikipedia so that cutting-edge scientific research is freely available to everyone.

Jon Davies, chief executive of Wikimedia UK, said: “This new role would see Wikimedia UK and Cancer Research UK joining forces to build on Wikipedia’s extensive information on cancer. The possibility of recruiting cancer scientists to help edit these important articles is very exciting.”

About Wikimedia UK

The Wikimedia projects are special: they are written and curated by thousands of volunteers. They are also supported by voluntary donations, through Wikimedia UK, the Wikimedia Foundation and other international chapters.

Wikimedia UK is a charity registered in England and Wales that supports and promotes Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons. Our mission is to help people and organisations create and preserve open knowledge, and to help provide easy access for all. We do this by supporting volunteer editors and contributors ('Wikimedians'), by working in partnership with cultural and educational institutions, by hosting training sessions and editing events, and by acting to advocate the benefits of open knowledge generally.

There are several ways to get involved in the charity's work. You can become a member for just £5 per year. You can volunteer to work with us in a variety of ways, both online and offline.
