Wikimedia UK is a growing charity with passionate volunteers, dedicated staff and devoted Trustees. We’re part of the global Wikimedia movement which supports projects such as Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikiversity (to name but three).
Wikimedia UK is delighted to announce that Katie Chan is joining our team as our Volunteer Support Organiser. Katie will be starting work on 11 March and is already well known to much of our community as she is a long time Wikimedian and volunteer. Below Katie introduces herself in her own words. We’re sure you’ll join us in extending her a warm welcome.

We recently commissioned a full review of our governance practices and procedures and what we found was that we’d become even more effective with a larger and more diverse Board of Trustees. This is where you come in.
“Hi everyone, I’m Katie Chan or KTC as I may be better known to some of you. I have been a Wikimedia editor since 2004, spending most of my time on the English Wikipedia though always happy to try my hands on the various sister projects. I have been a part of Wikimedia UK since our founding in 2008.

If you have an interest in Wikimedia projects, a commitment to open knowledge and the desire to help, we would love you to join us in helping to lead the charity through a period of growth and diversification.
“In my free time, when I’m not spending it on Wikipedia, I study part time in accountancy and physics. Over the last year, I have attended a number of events such as the [[EduWiki_Conference_2012|EduWiki Conference]] and [[GLAMcamp_London/September_2012|GLAMcamp]] where I have met a number of you and can only hope to meet more of you soon.

We especially welcome applicants with an experience and understanding of Wikimedia projects but this isn't essential. Energy, positivity and motivation are equally important.
“I will be based between the [[Office|office in Old Street]] and Lincoln before moving to London full-time later this month. Our plans for the future and my number one priority, is centred on building up our volunteer community. One of the first things I will be doing is a review of our volunteer agreements and policies. Working with the community, I want to make sure not only are you up-to-date, but that Wikimedia UK works to support each and every one of you in your volunteer activities. At our [http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2013/02/looking-at-the-next-five-years-a-day-workshop-on-the-future-of-wikimedia-uk/ open day on 23 March], I will be running a workshop on ways to develop our volunteer community. I look forward to hearing your views on this and other issues.<span class="plainlinks">[http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2013/03/katie-chan-joins-wikimedia-uk-as-volunteer-support-organiser/ <nowiki>[</nowiki>...<nowiki>]</nowiki>]</span>

We encourage anyone interested to apply and we particularly welcome female applicants as we currently have no female Trustees.

We hope that this appeals to you and, if so, please contact Richard Nevell, our Office Support Assistant, for more information on 020 7065 0990 or richard.nevell@wikimedia.org.uk

Open knowledge for all

Wikimedia UK is hiring – We are now accepting applications for a Membership, Fundraising and Operations Assistant

Our website

If you'd like to see what Wikimedia UK is working on, our website is the best place for our community of volunteers, donors and members to stay up to date.

About Wikimedia UK

The Wikimedia projects are special: they are written and curated by thousands of volunteers. They are also supported by voluntary donations, through Wikimedia UK, the Wikimedia Foundation and other international chapters.

Wikimedia UK is a charity registered in England and Wales that supports and promotes Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons. Our mission is to help people and organisations create and preserve open knowledge, and to help provide easy access for all. We do this by supporting volunteer editors and contributors ('Wikimedians'), by working in partnership with cultural and educational institutions, by hosting training sessions and editing events, and by acting to advocate the benefits of open knowledge generally.

There are several ways to get involved in the charity's work. You can become a member for just £5 per year. You can volunteer to work with us in a variety of ways, both online and offline. You can also make a donation (and if you're a UK taxpayer, we can claim Gift Aid). Subscribe to our Friends' Newsletter to stay in touch. Click the buttons below to learn more.
