| As around 1,000 international Wikimedians gathered in Washington, D.C, for [[wm2012:|Wikimania 2012]], an historic landmark was reached today as the [[:wikipedia:|English language Wikipedia]] recorded its 4 millionth article just eleven years after its creation.
| | The history of the World War One inevitably attracts a great deal of attention and interest, especially on Wikipedia. That's why Wikimedia UK and JISC teamed up for our first [[World_War_I/World_War_I_Editathon|WWI edit-a-thon at the British Library]] last month. |
| |
| It's taken a huge, ongoing collaborative effort to reach this point and everyone involved in the project can feel a warm glow of satisfaction.
| | The editathon brought together academic experts and editors of Wikipedia (Wikipedians) to create and improve Wikipedia articles on WWI. The aim of the event was to increase coverage and make the information as accurate, consistent, wide-ranging and up-to-date as possible, as well as building bridges between Wikipedian and academic communities. |

| The four-millionth article was [[:wikipedia:Izbat Al Borg|Izbat Al Borg]], a short article about a city in Egypt. The article was created by Mohammed Farag, an editor from Alexandria, Egypt, who edits under the username [[:wikipedia:User:Meno25|User:Meno25]]. This article reflects the global nature of the site’s content, and a lot of potential remains for new articles covering countries like Egypt, which are currently under-represented on the English Wikipedia – as has been shown by [http://wikiproject.oii.ox.ac.uk/mapping_wikipedia/ Mark Graham’s work at the Oxford Internet Institute] studying the global distribution of Wikipedia articles. <span class="plainlinks">[http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2012/07/english-language-wikipedia-hits-4-million-articles/<nowiki>[</nowiki>...<nowiki>]</nowiki>]</span> | | The Wikipedia page about [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_war_one World War One] attracts approximately 7.3 million page views per year - 597,945 for the month of June 2012 alone. Other key articles attract impressive numbers of readers, such as the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Versailles Treaty of Versailles] (114,190, ~1.4m/year) and the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Somme Battle of the Somme] (56,071, ~680k/year). <span class="plainlinks">[http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2012/07/wikimedia-uk-and-jisc-join-forces-for-world-war-one-editathon/<nowiki>[</nowiki>...<nowiki>]</nowiki>]</span> |

Wikimedia UK
Open knowledge for all
If you'd like to see what Wikimedia UK is working on, our website is the best place for our community of volunteers, donors and members to stay up to date.
The Wikimedia projects are special: they are written and curated by thousands of volunteers. They are also supported by voluntary donations, through Wikimedia UK, the Wikimedia Foundation and other international chapters.
Wikimedia UK is a charity registered in England and Wales that supports and promotes Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons. Our mission is to help people and organisations create and preserve open knowledge, and to help provide easy access for all. We do this by supporting volunteer editors and contributors ('Wikimedians'), by working in partnership with cultural and educational institutions, by hosting training sessions and editing events, and by acting to advocate the benefits of open knowledge generally.
There are several ways to get involved in the charity's work. You can become a member for just £5 per year. You can volunteer to work with us in a variety of ways, both online and offline. You can also make a donation (and if you're a UK taxpayer, we can claim Gift Aid). Subscribe to our Friends' Newsletter to stay in touch. Click the buttons below to learn more.
