Black History Month was developed in the UK by Akyaaba Addai Sebbo, working on as a Special projects Officer with the Greater Lonondon Council in 1987. While it was modelled on the US Black History Month (where it is also known as African-American History Month), is celebrated in October in the United Kingdom rather than in February as in the U.S.A., Canada and Berlin.
We want to celebrate it in the UK by running an event or a series of events in October 2012 aimed at improving Wikipedia articles related to Black history, music and culture. Attracting new editors from the community would be desirable too. In previous years there had been many events organised by various organisations around the Black History Month, and we could link with these events for example in the form of editathons.
Please do sign up below if you are interested in taking part, or if you have an idea for an event.
