Cancer Research UK teams up with Wikipedia to improve online cancer information 28 March 2011: Cancer Research UK focuses on improving quality of existing Wikipedia pages and adding more up-to-date and accurate information. Wikipedia authors (Wikipedians) hold a 'Wikipedia Workshop' to teach Wikipedia's culture to cancer experts. Derby Museums and Wikipedia join forces 14 January 2011: Derby Museums has today announced that it has become the first regional museum service in the UK to formally join forces with Wikimedia UK to help improve Wikipedia’s content. Wikimedia UK raises £500,000 in shortest fundraiser ever 10 January 2011: Incredible. Every year the Wikimedia movement sets a fundraising goal that it knows will be a stretch. They have to do it, because the Wikimedia websites and movement keep growing. Wikipedia is now the fifth most-visited website in the world, but our staff, infrastructure and budget are just a fraction of that of any other top 10 website. Announcing the “GLAM-WIKI:UK” conference 22 November 2010: On 26-27 November, the GLAM-WIKI conference at the British Museum will bring together Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums with Wikimedia for a series of hard-hitting presentations. Wikipedia Launches Annual Global Fundraising Appeal – UK Affiliate Sets Out Local Goals 15 November 2010: The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organisation behind Wikipedia, today launches its seventh annual fundraising appeal. Fundraising summit 7 May 2010: From Friday 14th to Sunday 16th May 2010, Wikimedia UK will host Wikimedia delegates from across the world as they meet in Bristol. Britain Loves Wikipedia 29 January 2010: Britain Loves Wikipedia is a month-long competition and series of events to be held in participating museums nationwide from 31 January 2010. Mary Rose Trust donation 3 January 2010: The Portsmouth-based Mary Rose Trust have released a number of photographs relating to the salvaged sixteenth-century warship Mary Rose onto Wikipedia. This is the first such image donation by a UK-based organisation. Public domain day 31 December 2009: What do Howard Carter, discoverer of the famed tomb of King Tutankhamen, novelist Ford Madox Ford, and sexologist Havelock Ellis all share in common? They all died in 1939. On New Year's Day 2010 all their works enter the public domain in the UK and become free for any use. Wikimedia Commons 5 million files 2 September 2009: Wikimedia Commons, one of the largest free media repositories on the Internet, reached the 5 million media files milestone today. Created just five years ago as a common repository of images for the different language versions of Wikipedia, it has grown to include video, animation, sound, and graphics files.
