About the Social & Public Health Sciences Editathon

With 47 million articles in 229 different languages, Wikipedia is now a well-established force for the democratization of knowledge, and to mark the 20th anniversary of the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit and Wikipedia’s 17th birthday, the Unit is hosting this editathon to contribute to information shared across the site.

Wikipedia is a key outreach tool, with one recent study showing that the encyclopedia shapes, as well as reflects, scientific thought.

The editathon will bring together researchers with shared and specific interests and expertise both in subject knowledge in public health, social science, social determinants of health, health inequalities, health policy, health interventions, and health data, and in areas of research knowledge and practice including methodologies, theories, models, or techniques.

This workshop has been specifically designed for those who are keen to understand how Wikipedia works, and the dos and don’ts for editing content. No experience is necessary, as training will be given by the Scottish Library and Information Council’s Wikimedian in Residence Sara Thomas. Please note that the event is aimed at subject experts with a view to engaging them in outreach activities. Citing one's own published work is permissible within reason but it should be noted that Wikipedia is not a soapbox.

This will be the first editathon held by the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit at the University of Glasgow and the Unit is delighted to be able to provide an opportunity to invite some of its research partners to take part so that together they can contribute to improving the body of knowledge shared through Wikipedia.

There are limited places for this session so expressions of interest are invited. Places will be confirmed by the Unit.

The intention is to offer a ‘meet-up’ to participants a short while following the editathon to enable them to support each other, share practice, and develop pages, or generate new pages, of interest to this community of researchers.
