Our work with universities

One of our strategic goals is to support the use of the Wikimedia projects as tools for education and learning in the UK. We work with universities, support teachers developing Open Educational Resources, and advocate for the use of Wikimedia in education.

Wikimedia in the Classroom

Here you can find an overview of universities across the UK who have current courses integrating engagement with Wikimedia Projects in some way.

Most focus on Wikipedia editing, while others include Wikimedia Commons, WikiBooks & WikiData engagement.

If you are interested in using Wikimedia editing as part of your teaching, please get in touch with Wikimedia UK at programmesatwikimedia.org.uk.

Are you running a course which isn't listed here? Please add your university to this page or get in touch. We would love to hear about how you are using Wikimedia in the classroom.

Wikimedia UK can put course leaders in touch with volunteers to help teach students about Wikipedia or troubleshoot issues with editing.

Importantly we want to make it easier for course leaders to contact each other and learn from the experience of their peers.

A person writing.

Setting up a course

  1. Define your topic – there are sometimes different sourcing requirements on Wikipedia (eg: the sciences and particular medical topics)
  2. Review Wikimedia's training materials at https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/training/editing-wikipedia
    • Pay particular attention to
      • Medical topics, uploading files, translating articles
The Wikimedia residency at the University of Edinburgh (video)
  1. Define the learning outcomes that you want to assess, such as...
    • Research skills
    • Critical evaluation of sources
    • Summarising sources
    • Writing in good English
    • Collaborative skills with other editors
  2. Map the outcomes to tasks which can be done through Wikimedia
