What's an editathon?
An Editathon ("Edit" + "Marathon") is an event where Wikipedia editors get together to improve content around a particular topic on Wikipedia, and includes training for people who are new to Wikipedia.
|
About the event
The Showpeople community of Glasgow have been working with Glasgow Museums to preserve and archive knowledge connected to Scottish fairground culture and history. However, there's a gap on Wikipedia about this knowledge, and we'd like to remedy that! Join us for an afternoon of Wiki training and editing.
- How do I prepare?
- Sign up for the event
- Create a Wikipedia account
- Bring a laptop or tablet (wi-fi will be provided)
- Learn about editing if you like: Tutorial, or Getting started on Wikipedia for more information
- Think about what you would like to edit about - you can even prepare some materials to bring with you on the day. We're working on a hit-list of articles (below) to give you a headstart. We'll provide some secondary sources on the day, but you may want to look out some other sources in advance.
- Photographs - if you'd like to bring photographs to illustrate Wikipedia, please do! We'll be happy to digitise them. Please note that you must own the copyright (or have permission from the copyright holder) and that all photographs would be released on a Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 License.
- Refreshments will be provided
Programme
13:00 - 13:30 ... Lunch & Introductions
13:30 - 15:00 ... Training on how to edit Wikipedia
15:00 - 17:00 ... Edit!
Attendees
Please create a Wikipedia account in advance of the event, and leave your username below:
Trainers
Wikimedian in Residence, Glasgow Museums - Sara Thomas
Conflict of Interest
Wikipedia has a strict policy on COI - you can't edit about your family, friends, or employers, for example.
Content
Here are some suggested articles we'd like to create or improve...
For improvement
- Glasgow Fair (event)
- Showmen's Guild of Great Britain
- Showman (UK section could be expanded, and needs references)
- Polari (glossary needs secondary sources)
- Links Market
- Govan Old Parish Church
For creation
- Glasgow Fair (painting)
- John Knox (painter)
- Kelvin Hall Circus or Kelvin Hall Winter Carnival
- The Fairground Society
- National Fairground Archive
- Fairground Art
The category Fairs in Scotland only has one entry, Links Market - are there others which could be added?
- Govan Fair
- Carlisle Easter Fair
- Hawick Fair
- Nairn Fair
- Keith Fair - Street fair, part of local Highland Show
- Inverkeithing Fair
- Alva Fair - part of Highland Games
- Aboyne Highland Games
