I’m pleased to announce that I have accepted the position of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedian_in_residence Wikimedian in Residence] with the [http://www.rsc.org/ Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)], a learned society and professional body whose roots go back to 1841 ([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Society_of_Chemistry see RSC on Wikipedia]).
You can also sign up to the <span class="plainlinks">[https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediauk-l email discussion list]</span> for the Wikimedia community in the UK.


Over the next year, starting 22 September, I will be helping my new RSC colleagues, and the Society’s members, to understand Wikipedia and its [https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Our_projects sister projects], and to contribute to making knowledge of chemistry, and related subjects, more freely available. The job is titled “WikiMedian”, because as well as WikiPedia, it covers those other projects, which are run by the Wikimedia community.

This follows on from my previous Wikipedia residences with Wildscreen ([https://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/ARKive_project on their ARKive project]), with [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/SAHS Staffordshire Archives and Heritage Service], at the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/NAGW New Art Gallery Walsall], and with Lancashire County Council’s Museum Service (at their [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/QSMM Queen Street Mill]), plus shorter projects with a number of other institutions (including West Midlands Police, The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Black Country Museum, and more). I’ll continue to be [http://orcid.org/blog/2014/06/04/announcing-orcid%E2%80%99s-wikipedian-residence Wikipedian in Residence at ORCID]. If you'd like to see what Wikimedia UK is working on, our website is the best place for our community of volunteers, donors and members to stay up to date.

About Wikimedia UK

The Wikimedia projects are special: they are written and curated by thousands of volunteers. They are also supported by voluntary donations, through Wikimedia UK, the Wikimedia Foundation and other international chapters.

Wikimedia UK is a charity registered in England and Wales that supports and promotes Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons. Our mission is to help people and organisations create and preserve open knowledge, and to help provide easy access for all. We do this by supporting volunteer editors and contributors ('Wikimedians'), by working in partnership with cultural and educational institutions, by hosting training sessions and editing events, and by acting to advocate the benefits of open knowledge generally.

There are several ways to get involved in the charity's work. You can become a member for just £5 per year. You can volunteer to work with us in a variety of ways, both online and offline.
