I'm starting from scratch building on [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Education]] partly because it's a featured portal, partly because we might be interested in using some of the same content (e.g. perhaps news, DYK, etc.). I now understand that the issue is the portal is trying to display templates, not the pages linked (and I'd edited the template page not the subpage). Obviously a fix is just to whack : everywhere, but that's not what the Wikipedia portal does so I'm a bit confused about why this has happened. Will go on with content for now in any case.
