Wikimedia UK recently lent its support to an innovative project to record the voices of notable people as an accompaniment to their Wikipedia articles. The project, being led by Wikipedian Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing) and supported by a Wikimedia UK microgrant, involves taking a sound recording of article subjects introducing themselves and adding the file to the Wikipedia article. Recent examples that you can listen to include television mogul [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Bazalgette Sir Peter Bazalgette] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Knight Lord Weymouth], a former MP and the project’s first peer of the realm.
You can follow us on Twitter (<span class="plainlinks">[http://twitter.com/wikimediauk @wikimediauk]</span>) or Like us on Facebook (<span class="plainlinks">[http://www.facebook.com/WikimediaUK WikimediaUK]</span>).

Andy explained the project in a little more detail. He said: “The idea is to let Wikipedia readers find out what the people we write about sound like, and how they pronounce their names. It’s great that we can hear the voices of people like [http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:M._K._Gandhi_speech_IARC.ogg Gandhi] and [http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alexander_Graham_Bell's_Voice.ogg Alexander Graham Bell], but what about all the other historic figures, whose voices are lost forever? We shouldn’t let that happen when we have the technology and resources so easily available. Sure, some of our subjects are known for media appearances, but those aren’t necessarily available globally nor under an open licence. And most have never appeared on radio or TV.

Wikimedia UK

Open knowledge for all

Our website

If you'd like to see what Wikimedia UK is working on, our website is the best place for our community of volunteers, donors and members to stay up to date.

About Wikimedia UK

The Wikimedia projects are special: they are written and curated by thousands of volunteers. They are also supported by voluntary donations, through Wikimedia UK, the Wikimedia Foundation and other international chapters.

Wikimedia UK is a charity registered in England and Wales that supports and promotes Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons. Our mission is to help people and organisations create and preserve open knowledge, and to help provide easy access for all. We do this by supporting volunteer editors and contributors ('Wikimedians'), by working in partnership with cultural and educational institutions, by hosting training sessions and editing events, and by acting to advocate the benefits of open knowledge generally.

There are several ways to get involved in the charity's work. You can become a member for just £5 per year. You can volunteer to work with us in a variety of ways, both online and offline. You can also make a donation (and if you're a UK taxpayer, we can claim Gift Aid). Subscribe to our Friends' Newsletter to stay in touch. Click the buttons below to learn more.
