On Saturday I spoke in Lincoln at the [[WikiConference UK 2013|WikimediaUK Conference]] on Mediawiki for OER and Learning Analytics – [http://www.slideshare.net/sjgknight/media-wiki-for-oer-and-learning-analytics-understanding-learning-resources-and-learners?ref=http://people.kmi.open.ac.uk/knight/2013/06/wmuk-conference-mediawiki-for-oer-and-learning-analytics/ slides (with audio) here], video (I think) available on the conference link some time later this week.

I’d met a group of the people last year at [[EduWiki Conference 2012|EduWiki 2012]] (and my thoughts at: [http://www.nominettrust.org.uk/knowledge-centre/blogs/wikipedia-education-and-tracking-how-knowledge-used EduWiki 2012]), and my talk built a lot on the work I did at Cambridge on the [http://orbit.educ.cam.ac.uk/wiki/Home ORBIT] project – creating a platform for OER on interactive teaching particularly in STEM subject, as well as more recent work related to my PhD. In particular I was talking about some stuff I’ve covered in blogs on:

I’ve put some thoughts below on particular aspects of the event, in the long run I think there are some interesting questions around how wikimedia meets its targets (and what those are), one thing I was thinking about yesterday was whether we need to start thinking about the mediawiki platform as a classroom tool in the same way as google has pushed google docs – it’s a good way to encourage brand affiliation, and familiarise people with your tools (and get them off microsoft’s – who of course do exactly the same thing). '''It may be that tools like mediawiki – particularly given that they are open source, very flexible, and allow a lot of interesting pedagogic and analytic things to happen, might be particularly amenable to the sort of ‘technology for pedagogy' things I talked about not so long ago.''' <span class="plainlinks">[http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2013/06/wmuk-conference-mediawiki-for-oer-and-learning-analytics/ <nowiki>[</nowiki>Continues ...<nowiki>]</nowiki>]</span>

Wikimedia UK

Open knowledge for all

Our website

If you'd like to see what Wikimedia UK is working on, our website is the best place for our community of volunteers, donors and members to stay up to date.

About Wikimedia UK

The Wikimedia projects are special: they are written and curated by thousands of volunteers. They are also supported by voluntary donations, through Wikimedia UK, the Wikimedia Foundation and other international chapters.

Wikimedia UK is a charity registered in England and Wales that supports and promotes Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons. Our mission is to help people and organisations create and preserve open knowledge, and to help provide easy access for all. We do this by supporting volunteer editors and contributors ('Wikimedians'), by working in partnership with cultural and educational institutions, by hosting training sessions and editing events, and by acting to advocate the benefits of open knowledge generally.

There are several ways to get involved in the charity's work. You can become a member for just £5 per year. You can volunteer to work with us in a variety of ways, both online and offline. You can also make a donation (and if you're a UK taxpayer, we can claim Gift Aid). Subscribe to our Friends' Newsletter to stay in touch. Click the buttons below to learn more.
