Project description

Briefly describe the issue or problem that motivates this application. What needs are you meeting?

We want to improve the quality of information about endangered languages and linguistics on Wikipedia.

There are many languages in the world, and thanks to the work of the Languages WikiProject and Endangered Languages WikiProject we've automatically harvested the basic information to make pages for many of the world's languages. What we need to do now is start populating these with quality information. We want to see more pages like those for Wagiman or Greenlandic, but currently 6744 languages are little more than stubs on English Wikipedia.

Describe project activities. What will you use the funding to do?

The plan is for a monthly meetup at a regular time and location Start actively targeting linguistics students and teachers interested in Endangered Languages and linguistic diversity to use their knowledge and skills to create summaries of information about endangered languages and other linguistic topics on English Wikipedia, or any other language Wikipedia if they have the language competency.

The project began at SOAS and is now being continued at Oxford University, meeting twice a term (6 times per year).

Describe your plan for evaluating this project. How will you measure success? What types of things will you measure (e.g. content, participants)?

I expect around 10 participants a month minimum, based on my experience running a lingwiki editathon in Singapore. I expect that around half of these will become regular editors, meaning we will hopefully have around 40 participants across the scheduled semester. Some participants may choose to make deep edits to a single language page across multiple sessions, while others may make many changes to a diversity of pages, but I hope that across the six sessions we'll edit around 75-100 pages on endangered languages. Some pages will have a single link, or paragraph added, while others will have detailed improvements. These different types of changes will be tracked. The distribution of materials on how to edit Wikipedia pages on endangered languages will also be another measure of the success of this project. I have used Google Survey to track participation and satisfaction with previous events of this kind, however I would also be interested in attempting to use the Wikimetrics tool to track participation and retention.

Identify key people involved in this project. How will or could the wider Wikimedian community be involved?

Key people will be Lauren and Charlotte. These are internal events for linguistics students and academics at SOAS and Oxford so involving the wider community might be a challenge. However, we have received very valuable support from the Wikimedian in Residence in Oxford.

If applicable, identify partnering organisations for this project (not essential)

SOAS, University of London and the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics, University of Oxford.

What targets have you set? What will you measure?

What contribution will the project make to our strategic goals?

Contributes to developing Open Knowledge by improving subject matter on Wikipedia, in potentially more than one language.

Aims to train new editors, and produce high quality content.

Strengthens relationship with SOAS and Oxford.

Who will be recording/measuring the project metrics, and writing up a project report?

Charlotte and Lauren

Estimated cost?

£540, or £90 per event (though may come in cheaper depending on attendance) A further breakdown is here

What staff support is being requested?

None, some basic support with processing expenses and metrics.

How can you get other volunteers involved? What roles could they have?

As above, this would be an internal project at SOAS and Oxford.

What meeting or other space is needed?

All provided by university.

Are other resources needed (such as computers, books, camera equipment, food, contacts, infrastructure)? How will they be sourced?

All sourced by university.

If any partner organisations have been identified, have they been contacted and are they committed?

Charlotte and Lauren have links to SOAS and Oxford.

Does this project require more extensive funding? What would any WMUK funds be used for?

No

Are external funds needed that we can apply for? If so where will they be sought?

No

Are there any resources that you can contribute? Such as equipment.

The Endangered Languages Documentation Project (ELDP) have offered space and equipment (such as internet) to host the events at SOAS. The University of Oxford is likewise providing space and equipment.
