| ==Background==
| |
|
| |
|
| In August 2015 a volunteer got in touch to ask about Wikidata training. There had been a previous session in the second half of 2014 that was popular and there will be many volunteers who weren't able to attend. If there is enough interest then a second session in the same vein can easily be arranged at Wikimedia UK's office. Ed Saperia has made a thoughtful provisional offer of his space, too. Charles Matthews has kindly offered to lead a session and hopefully other volunteers can be encouraged to deliver something, too.
| | I shall be leading the session, with Andrew Gray. If you have already expressed an interest, you need to sign up below to confirm that you are coming: there is not unlimited space in the venue. |
|
| |
|
| If you are interested in attending please do add your name to the list below. If you are interested in delivering a session, talk or workshop of any kind, please do add your name to the second list and outline what you would like to do.

| ==Possible programme - what would you like to cover?==
| |
| My initial idea is to assume only familiarity with Wikipedia editing, and give a fairly gentle introduction to basic entry work on Wikidata, as the first session.
| |
| | |
| After that it is natural to look at two directions: semi-automated work (i.e. use of tools) which makes it easy to cover ground more quickly; and the various front ends that already exist to display Wikidata content. The use of Wikidata queries is also basic to using the site in other contexts. Charles Matthews (talk) 17:37, 3 August 2015 (BST)

| Possible areas of interest might include how Wikidata may be used in the English Wikipedia, including a review of the community's attitudes to the use of Wikidata, its advantages and pitfalls. Another item could be how we might make use of Wikidata in the Welsh Wikipedia to help create articles by supplying a framework (infobox) for the article to be expanded. Such a project could be an excellent controlled case study for using Wikidata to improve other small Wikipedias. --RexxS (talk) 21:07, 3 August 2015 (BST)

| :: There was some discussion on the email list, and GLAMs is an area that should be covered. Andy Mabbett suggested looking at this: Wikidata:Tours at Wikidata LoopZilla (talk) 13:42, 2 September 2015 (BST)

| A somewhat specialist request: I have a personal interest in English / British laws, and would like to know how to develop those entries on wikidata. | * I went to a very good one-day introduction to Wikidata in Amsterdam last year, see :wmnl:Wikidata GLAMs, which I thought had a good format -- in particular the aim of the first session, before lunch, getting attendees to the point where they had each chosen a topic of interest to them, found its item on Wikidata, and made at least one edit to it. That element of expecting everyone to have done something by the end of each session (and knowing in advance what sort of something you want that something to be), I think is really valuable. Also the very focussed nature of the first practical session: what is Wikidata, what does a wikidata page look like, how do you make a manual edit to it. (And no more).
