Free Culture Weekend

Attendees at the Free Culture Weekend

As part of the build-up to Wikimania 2014, a "fringe" Free Culture Weekend was held at the Barbican in London on 7-8 June. A number of GLAM topics were discussed. There is an etherpad with notes from the event.

Jewellery pictures

Andy Mabbett secured a donation of over 17,000 images of jewellery, silverware and other items, from Fellows, a Birmingham auction house. These were kindly uploaded by Fæ.

National Library of Scotland

Scotia Depicta - Tarnaway or Danaway Castle in 1801 before the 1810 rebuild

The first three batches of digital content from the National Library of Scotland’s collections have been successfully uploaded to Wikimedia Commons this month! This follows the acceptance in March 2014 of a library-wide policy that places all NLS-generated metadata under a CC-0 licence; digital content will be released under either a CC-0 or CC-BY-NC-SA licence.

This is extremely exciting and is the result of a combined effort from the NLS and Wikimedia UK; hopefully it is just the first in many projects of this type both at the NLS and at other Scottish organisations!

Expert outreach

WMUK is supporting a Wiki Workshop for Geographers at the Royal Geographical Society (1 Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AR) on Monday 7th July 2014, 1pm-5pm. Registration for this expert outreach event opened in May. 2-3 trainers are needed for this event, one of whom will need to act as lead trainer. Travel expenses will be covered as usual. Sign up on this page, if you're willing to join in as a trainer. This workshop is being led by Dr Toni Sant, WMUK's Education Organiser.

Wikimania Future of Education Workshop

Working together to build the education track at Wikimania, Future of Education Workshop

The Future of Education workshop was held on 21-22 June as a Wikimania 2014 Fringe. About 20 participants from seven countries (Australia, Austria, Germany, Jordan, Tunisia, UK & USA) attended this two-day workshop at the Barbican in preparation for the Future of Education track at Wikimania 2014. The main outcome involves plans for a 2-day Education Pre-Conference at Wikimania (on 6 + 7 August), focusing mainly on providing workshops for Campus Ambassadors and Educators.

EduWiki Conference 2014

This event looks to raise awareness of the educational possibilities of Wikipedia and sister projects, and developing Wikimedia UK's academic engagement. A survey about WMUK's education activities around EduWiki was circulated in May 2014 to attendees of the EduWiki conferences organised in previous years. It is envisioned that the responses from this survey will help enhance the programme for EduWiki 2014 and further engagement with the event attendees over the years, as well as enhance the final report about last year's conference.

The conference will be held at Edinburgh First's St Leonard's Hall (University of Edinburgh) on Friday 31 October. Latest details about this event are available through this wiki page. Registration is open until late September.

Fundraising

This month, we received £115 in one-off donations, with 2 individual donations. The average donation amount was £57.5 - of the donations that were eligible for gift aid, 50% had Gift Aid Declarations made and matched with their records. There were 4750 successful direct debits this month, bringing in a total of £19827.92
