'''United Kingdom, 16th April 2011''': Wikipedia’s sister site, Wikimedia Commons (Commons), the library of images, sound files, and videos that constitutes an integral component of Wikipedia’s user experience, has hit the 10 million media files milestone. The ten millionth file uploaded to Commons is a photograph of a waterfowl observation platform near Lipno Lake in the Wdzydze Landscape Park in Poland. It was uploaded by Commons user [http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Leinad Leinad], who has been uploading to Commons since 2006. Leinad is active on the Polish Wikipedia, and attended the 2010 Wikimania conference in Gdansk.


United Kingdom, XX March 2011: Wikipedia’s sister site, Wikimedia Commons, today announces it has surpassed 10 million media files making it world’s largest online repository of free-use images, video, animation, sounds and graphics. Wikimedia Commons (also known as Commons) has grown at a rate of one million media files per year since 2006 thanks to donations from a wide range of sources, from personal photography by Wikimedia Commons users to images from public archives.
Today’s entry marks less than a two year period during which more than five million new files have been uploaded. This is in part thanks to Wikimedia’s global volunteer building more and more relationships with cultural institutions and collection holders around the world, receiving and uploading large treasures of photographs, video and other content. In the United Kingdom, the ''Geograph Britain and Ireland" project that called for geographically representative photographs for every square kilometre of Great Britain and Ireland donated 1.7 million images making it one of the largest organisational contributors to Commons over the past twelve months.

All files on Wikimedia Commons can be used for any purpose, including commercial use, under terms consistent with the Definition of Free Cultural Works. We would like to encourage galleries, libraries, museums and all those working in  the arts or in public archives to consider sharing images with Wikimedia Commons. With around 411m visitors per month in up to 250 languages worldwide, it is a great way for these organisations to reach out to a wider audience."


Several image related projects have driven the expansion of Commons over the years. Since March 2005, the 'Geograph Britain and Ireland' project has contributed nearly xxx images of geographically located photographs of the British Isles. Photographs in the Geograph collection are chosen to illustrate significant or typical features of each 1 km x 1 km grid square in the Ordnance Survey National Grid and the Irish national grid reference system, which includes everything from a waterfall in Tessdale in the Pennines to an image of people walking near Blackpool Tower. 
Wikimedia Foundation and its affiliate UK chapter would like to thank the tens of thousands of individuals who have contributed to Wikimedia Commons and who have helped bring the project to this milestone.
 
 
Many images available via the Commons are of high quality and are inspiring. Every year the community celebrates these finest images by running an annual picture of the year competition. The best freely-licensed images are picked from those that have been awarded ‘featured picture’ status by the community over the previous twelve months. There are currently 3,385 of such images, which is roughly 0.03% of the repository.
 
 
The winner of the 2009 competition was an image of a Sikh pilgrim at the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar, India. It was taken by, Wikimedian (a Wikimedia Commons contributor) Paulrudd. The 2010 competition is still in progress.
