Description and overall rationale

As a part of Wikimedia UK's remit to support Wikimedia outreach projects and develop volunteer skills, we continue to deliver the Train the Trainers programme where volunteer Wikimedians are taught to deliver effective training. With ambition to build our outreach programme, there is a need to continue delivery of this strand of work, particularly focusing on geographical areas that lack trainers.

Our aim here is to increase the number and quality of WMUK’s events, eventually leading to more UK based editors. This area feeds into other programme activities where we are delivering outreach events, e.g. Program 2. Better quality training should result in more retention in these trained at the Wikimedia events. And so a longer term outcome of this programme is increasing the number of UK editors/volunteers - thriving community of UK volunteers - (via trained trainers delivering workshops) and increasing content quantity and quality (via newly trained people contributing to the project). However, looking at this programme in itself, the outcomes are getting volunteers trained as trainers, and them delivering training sessions.

Timelines - i.e. what happens quarter by quarter

Sessions planned:

  • Q2 - delivery of the refresher course for existing trainers (June)
  • Q2 - prep for the Wikimania session to support international chapters
  • Q3 - Wikimania session to support international chapters - August
Success criteria and Metrics - overall and quarter by quarter breakdown if relevant


Risks
  • Trained people not used enough leading to high costs.
  • Insufficient breadth of trainer in terms of geography or background.
  • We cannot find enough people of sufficient quality to train.
  • Those who have received training do not volunteer as trainers at our events.
  • The expected quality is not maintained.
