Cardiff Bay at night     The calls for formal proposals as well as editathons and/or hackatons are now closed and everyone who emailed a submission will be contacted by the second or third week of September. Initial proposals from WMUK community members for general ideas are currently also being processed.

EduWiki Conference 2013 is the second annual conference organised by Wikimedia UK, focusing on Education projects.

This edition of the conference is in the planning stage and this page currently holds basic information regarding some of the essential considerations being discussed by the Education Committee.

Eventually, as these plans become more concrete, this page will carry all the information about the EduWiki Conference 2013.

About EduWiki 2013

A recent white paper from TurnItIn, the online plagiarism-prevention service used widely across higher education in the UK, claims that "Wikipedia has an outsized presence as a content source for student writing". This study is based on an analysis of over 112 million content matches from 28 million student papers submitted to TurnItIn between July 2011 and June 2012. 11% of these content matches are from Wikipedia. However, the same report is quick to explain that Wikipedia has academic merit in terms of educational value. TurnItIn's recommendation is to "educate students that the true value of Wikipedia is to provide a curated summary on a topic, and that they should follow the sources and citations at the bottom of Wikipedia entries to verify the accuracy of the information and to uncover primary source material".

Audience

We aim to accommodate a total of 80 - 120 delegates, coming mainly from these areas:

• Higher Education
• Secondary/High Schools
• Adult and Lifelong learning

Conference Themes

The conference will revolve around broad themes including the following streams:

• The Wikipedia Education Program
• Open Educational Resources
• Critical thinking, digital literacy and wiki-literacy
• Assessment and accreditation
• Open learning communities such as Wikiversity

Wikmedia UK has invited proposals for papers, presentation, provocations and/or posters, especially ones addressing the Wikipedia problem highlighted by the TurnItIn white paper. Proposal for panels and roundtable discussions from groups of three or four participants were also encouraged. A further call for editathon and/or hackaton ideas during or immediately after the conference was also available. All calls are now closed. A good number of proposals have been submitted and are now being carefully considered.

Conference Schedule

A detailed schedule will be available in the coming days. Meanwhile you can view an draft outline of the planned programme as it takes shape.

The conference begins on Friday morning and ends on Saturday afternoon, but will be followed by further activities (walking tours, edit-a-thons and a hack-a-thon) on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

The programme will eventually be assembled on this page by the same process of good faith collaboration that drives Wikipedia and its sister projects.
