Volunteering/New contributor/Membership

Wikimedia UK was, registered at companies house in 2008 under company number 6741827, originally as Wiki Ltd UK and as a private limited company. We adopted Articles of Association that set out how the company was structured, including the ability of individuals to become members and elect directors.

In 2009 the company began the process that lead to it becoming a registered charity to recognise the impact of its work in terms of outreach and promoting freely licensed educational content in 2011. Directors continued to be elected by members, but were now also Trustees of the charity, responsible for setting the strategy that would deliver its charitable objectives.

Membership is a way of supporting the aims of the Wikimedia movement, having a say on how these are delivered in the United Kingdom, and becoming part of the community of people who make the amazing things happen both on and offline.

This site has many useful resources for members. This section is aimed at giving an overview to members who haven't had much direct experience of editing or contributing to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, the other wikimedia projects or even this wiki!
