The following characteristics should each be held by at least one member of the board

- Experience of the open-knowledge movement, and Wikimedia in particular
- Experience within the education, research, or cultural sectors
- Community
- Experience of volunteer-driven organisations outside the Wikimedia movement
- Experience of organisations with multiple tiers of structure (e.g. national/regional, international/national)
- Experience of online communities outside the Wikimedia movement
- Governance
- Experience of governance roles in non-profit organisation e.g. charities, school governors, local councils
- Experience of organisations with a high public profile
- Experience of governance in a global movement
- Specific skills
- Technology
- Fundraising
- Accountancy and book-keeping
- Law
- Regulatory compliance
The Board
The following characteristics should be held by the Board as a whole
- Diversity
A diverse Board, including but not limited to the following characteristics:
- A reasonable gender balance (no more than 2/3 of the Board being of either gender)
- Varied in age
- Reflecting the ethnic and cultural diversity of the UK
- Geographically spread across the UK
