- Reporting to: CE
- Salary: £25,000 - £29,000 Depending on experience
- Benefits: 25 days annual leave (excluding bank holidays), 6% employer pension contributions
- Location: Central London (remote working considered)
Summary
During the 2011 global Wikimedia fundraising campaign, fundraising banners were displayed on Wikipedia. Through that, Wikimedia UK raised £1 million from 44,000 donors. We need a professional fundraiser to manage our participation in similar campaigns in 2012 and in future, as well as managing relationships with our donors and broadening our sources of income.
To do this, the Fundraiser will need to:
- Support the CE by developing and delivering Wikimedia UK’s fundraising activities, especially the annual Wikimedia fundraiser.
- Develop and implement communications with our donors
- Be part of the office team delivering the Wikimedia UK plan
- Build a relationship of trust with the board and the broader Wikimedia community
- Be accountable for the budgeting and resources of Wikimedia UK’s fundraising activities.
- Develop Wikimedia UK’s membership activities and membership communications
Key responsibilities
- Management duties
- Work with the CE, the Wikimedia Foundation, Trustees and volunteers to implement and develop the annual Wikimedia fundraiser and develop a range of fundraising activities appropriate to the needs of Wikimedia UK
- Report to the CE and office manager ensuring that expenditure is controlled in line with the fundraising budget and income targets.
- Prepare regular, publicly available, reports to the CE and board on fundraising income and expenditure including assessments of success and ensure these are openly available
- Be responsible for all aspects of Wikimedia UK’s fundraising activities working wherever appropriate with volunteers to make them professionally run and productive.
- Handle all documentation regarding fundraising and support the office manager in accounting for them financially.
- Work with contracted developers and the CE to ensure technical development of forms, landing pages and CiviCRM meets fundraising needs
- Encourage and promote the involvement of volunteers and ensure that volunteers are provided with opportunities to support and participate in the organisation
- Liaise with the Wikimedia Foundation and other Wikimedia chapters to develop and share good practice
- Working with the Office and Development Manager, ensure that all donor data is accurate, up-to-date, and in line with data protection requirements, and that donors are thanked promptly
- With the Office and Development Manager, monitor and report on Direct Debit attrition and Gift Aid uptake
- Actively manage relationships with higher-value donors, including research and communications where appropriate
- Develop our other fundraising activities, including text message donations, payroll giving, and other priorities as may be identified
- Develop our understanding of our donors, their needs and motivations, via research activity
- Develop donor-focused communications, particularly through email, direct mail, and on our website, aimed at soliciting repeat donations and encouraging donors to edit Wikipedia and other sites, working with the Communications Manager as appropriate
- Promote membership of Wikimedia UK
- Project Management
- Prepare, run and evaluate the Wikimedia UK fundraising plan
- Implement fundraising campaigns on Wikipedia using the CentralNotice system
- Work with colleagues in the Wikimedia Foundation and other chapters to ensure consistency of approach and messages.
- Monitor the delivery and financial security of Wikimedia UK’s fundraising programme.
- Support and propose the development of new projects
Person Specification
- Experience
- Proven experience of fundraising gained in a charity or not-for-profit background, in particular:
- Direct response fundraising (whether online, offline, or both)
- Developing donor communications and stewardship by mail or email
- Experience of other areas of fundraising, e.g. membership organisations, payroll giving, trusts, high-value gifts, legacies or events is desirable.
- Proven experience of planning and interpreting fundraising or marketing test activity
- Experience of working with fundraising databases
- Experience of using online tools, e.g. blogs, website CMS, HTML and CSS
- (Desirable) Experience of MediaWiki, javascript and/or PHP
- Experience using social media
- An understanding of charity and fundraising good practice and law, including data protection
- Experience of working effectively in a volunteer orientated organisation.
- Experience of working in a charitable or not-for-profit environment (desirable)
- Track record in delivering projects against budgets
- Experience of applying market research insights to fundraising programmes (desirable)
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
