For any small grant (between £5 and £250) we have a lightweight process of Microgrants. These are ideal for a train ticket to help with a Wikimedia related research project, photocopying costs or innovative idea you have for improving engagement or access for one of the Wikimedia projects. If your idea relates to delivering part of an existing large programme such as GLAM or Outreach it may be quicker to email the budget holder directly to check if this can be covered under current plans. See Board for trustee contacts.

Macrogrants are intermediate size projects in the range £250-£2,000. These may be submitted as a one page document for review by the WMUK board, either in wiki or PDF format. Please discuss your idea with one of the trustees or staff and then either create a sub-page here for review or prepare a one page summary document for review.
From time to time Wikimedia UK is able to find additional funding to part-fund (& very occasionally fully fund)  larger or more long-term projects, such as a year-long workshop series, research project or small Wikimedian in Residence post.  These are usually set up as a partnership with a group or an organisation, rather than an individual. More information is available on the Partnership Funding page.

For new very large (£2,000+), or complex projects involving 4 or more people, please consider creating a page on this wiki to develop and discuss your proposal (though remember to search for any previous discussions, you may find it helpful to ask at our Water cooler). Examples include Wikimania bid and Wikimedia Girl Geek Dinner.

Volunteer grants

Wikimedia UK volunteer Project grants are ideal for small projects or events aimed at improving content, engagement, or access for one of the Wikimedia projects.  Typically grants under this scheme have a ceiling of £250, however there is some flexibility and we are more than happy to discuss. More information as to what we can and cannot fund is available on the Project Grants page. We have also in the past supported scholarships to attend conferences and meetings.

Partnership funding

From time to time Wikimedia UK is able to find additional funding to part-fund (& very occasionally fully fund)  larger or more long-term projects, such as a year-long workshop series, research project or small Wikimedian in Residence post.  These are usually set up as a partnership with a group or an organisation, rather than an individual. More information is available on the Partnership Funding page.

Global Wikimedia grants

The Wikimedia Foundation offers grants at Grants:Start, in the first instance the WMF will expect your local chapter to be approached. If your project is global in nature or fits well within Foundation initiatives such as the Global South programme it may be worth discussing with WMF staff. For large inter-chapter initiatives (such as taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments) please approach Wikimedia UK first as there may already be plans and budget available, though you may find Grant Advisory Committee a useful source of international chapter contacts who would be happy to help with advising on your ideas.
