This is an introduction for anyone who doesn’t know Wikidata yet. Discover the basics about the open knowledge base, how its content is organized, how to edit, add and query data, and a few examples of how Wikidata can be reused on the Wikimedia projects to support the small languages and their communities.

Mae hwn yn gyflwyniad i unrhyw un sydd ddim yn gwybod am Wikidata eto. Darganfyddwch yr hanfodion am y sail gwybodaeth agored, sut mae ei gynnwys yn cael ei drefnu, sut i olygu, ychwanegu a chwilio data, a rhai enghreifftiau o sut y gellir ailddefnyddio Wikidata ar y prosiectau Wikimedia i gefnogi’r ieithoedd bychain a’u cymunedau.
The ArticlePlaceholder uses the multilingual information contained in Wikidata to enrich the content of Wikipedia, providing basic information about a topic, a groundwork for the articles that don't exist yet. In this talk, we will learn how the ArticlePlaceholder is used on several Wikipedias, such as the Welsh Wikipedia, and what are the outcomes for the communities. We will learn more about the feedback collected from the editors, and the next steps of the tool.

Mae ArticlePlaceholder yn defnyddio gwybodaeth amlieithog a ddelir yn Wikipedia i gyfoethogi cynnwys Wikipedia, gan ddarparu gwybodaeth sylfaenol am destun, a man cychwyn i erthyglau sydd ddim yn bod eto. Yn y sgwrs yma byddwn yn dysgu sut y defnyddir ArticlePlaceholder mewn sawl Wikipedia, gan gynnwys y Wicipedia Cymraeg, a beth yw’r canlyniadau ar gyfer cymunedau. Byddwn yn dysgu mwy am yr adborth a gasglwyd gan y golygyddion, a’r camau nesaf i’r erfyn yma.
After five years storing and describing concepts, Wikidata is about to start collecting information about words and phrases. The lexicographical data will bring structured, machine-readable, multilingual and community-powered data, that can be reused on Wiktionary or other projects. We will present the first version of the tool and discuss about the use cases of lexicographical data.

Wedi pum mlynedd o storio a disgrifio cysyniadau, mae Wikidata ar fin cychwyn casglu gwybodaeth am eiriau a chymalau. Bydd y data geiriadurol yn dod â gwybodaeth strwythuredig, sy’n ddarllenadwy i beiriannau, yn amlieithog, ac wedi ei yrru gan gymunedau, a fydd yn gallu cael i ailddefnyddio yn Wiktionary a phrosiectau eraill. Byddwn yn cyflwyno’r fersiwn gyntaf o’r erfyn yma ac yn trafod enghreifftiau o ddefnyddio data geiriadurol
Wikidata is a centralised store of multilingual, structured data for use in Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects and by anyone, anywhere in the world. Thus, it has the ability to efficiently serve the needs of many language communities; that potential is, however, constrained by the need to translate labels. We will begin with a brief overview of Wikidata, including a summary of the current state of multilingualism and why increased language coverage is beneficial. Moving on, the main part will focus on query techniques for surfacing items without a label in a specific language that are, nonetheless, likely to be relevant to that community. Lastly, we will look at tools that can help us to add more language labels to Wikidata.
;Biography/Bywgraffiad
I work as a secondary school teacher at the first school teaching in Catalan in Mallorca after Franco’s dictatorship. I’m interested in the implementation of free software in schools. I have taught various training courses for teachers on the GNU/Linux operating system, the didactic applications of wikis and Wikipedia, the application of netbooks in the classroom and the virtual learning environment Moodle. My school is a worker cooperative and I’m also an activist for cooperativism.

Since 2005, I have been an editor of Wikipedia. I usually work in Catalan Wikipedia in maintenance. Lately, I’ve been interested in how to use Wikidata to improve Wikipedia.
This course provides a long-term perspective on a single contentious issue: whether and how early medieval clerics could be put on trial in secular courts. The question of ‘criminous clerks’ is most famously associated with the cause célèbre of Thomas Becket in the twelfth century, but this was merely the latest in a long line of similarly explosive confrontations that reached back to the establishment of the church in the Roman Empire.

The course also however situates this topic in a new context, that of global public humanities. Both public and scholarly perceptions of the past are increasingly mediated through free online resources, such as Wikipedia, rather than traditional published sources, with significant consequences for the production and consumption of historical knowledge. Historians have often ignored this development; but this course chooses instead to squarely engage with it, requiring its participants to use the knowledge they acquire to improve Wikipedia, whether by adding new pages on relevant topics or editing those that already exist, as well as to reflect on the implications of this new form of dissemination.

The two-hour seminar format allows each seminar to discuss an aspect of digital humanities, focusing on Wikipedia, alongside a substantive discussion of early medieval sources and historiography. In doing so, it juxtaposes shifts in the early medieval knowledge about clergy – what their role should be, how they should be treated, and how that information was transmitted – with shifts in the creation and dissemination of contemporary historical knowledge.

About the event
This 90 minute workshop is intended to provide attendees with an overview of how Wikipedia works in practice and the etiquette of contributing to the online encyclopedia. No knowledge or previous experience of Wikipedia is necessary to participate. New editors are welcome and they will be trained in basic Wikipedia editing skills to help them make their first contributions.

*HST6079: Early Medieval Clerical Exemption in a Digital Age
**Organised by Dr Charles West

.

Introduction
*HST6079: Early Medieval Clerical Exemption in a Digital Age
**Organised by Dr Charles West

[[File:Hywel Dda Edit-a-thon 01.JPG|thumb|The Laws of Hywel Dda manuscript (Peniarth MS 28, National Library of Wales) and a laptop displaying the Hywel Dda Wikipedia article.

UK Wikimedian of the Year
Ewan McAndrew
Ewan's work with Edinburgh University is hugely important for normalising the use of Wikipedia in an academic setting. Without being able to point out the great work he has done there i doubt i would have got Aberystwyth University to start taking Wikipedia seriously as a teaching tool. But the main reason for nominating Ewan is the Celtic Knot Conference. Ewan clearly worked incredibly hard on putting this event together, which by all accounts was a great success. From a Welsh perspective, a Wiki conference focused on smaller and minority languages was hugely valuable, as issues on smaller Wiki's can be very different to those on en Wiki. Jason.nlw (talk) 15:44, 11 July 2017 (BST)
: I'd like to endorse Ewan's nomination for all his valuable work in Scotland, especially the Celtic Knot Conference. --86.24.232.177 17:05, 11 July 2017 (BST)
: I wish to endorse this nomination. Ewan was a fantastic support the last time we ran a twin event together. He's developed some great training resources that will benefit all wikimedia trainers and the scope and variety of the events he has run as a wikimedian in residence are truly outstanding. Elflin (talk) 22:07, 13 July 2017 (BST)

Ritchie333
Ritchie, despite being part of a group including myself who constantly have to deal with idiots on the site has remained strong and focused on content. He deserves the award for that alone haha but the real reason is his promotion of List of London Monopoly locations to Good Article and Featured list status. He put in a massive amount of work and time to sort out those core articles and promote them which deserves recognition, they make a big difference to London topics on Wikipedia.
Brianboulton
I would like to nominate Brianboulton as the Wikipedian of the year. He is one of our finest FA contributors, one of only three to have written over a hundred Featured Articles and, until recently, one of the co-ordinators of the TFA process to administrate over the FA front page contribution. He has been hugely active in the Peer Review and FAC process, aiding editors constantly to ensure that the highest standards are retained for our best work.

Aside from his tireless work on content and processes, he brings a light touch of tact and diplomacy in discussions, remaining calm, even and balanced – even when discussions become fraught. He is a credit to Wikipedia and we are lucky to count him amongst us. – SchroCat (talk) 13:04, 13 July 2017 (BST)

Jason Evans
I know that Jason has nominated the National Library of Wales for Partnership of the Year but I think he also deserves recognition for his hard work and enthusiasm, which has been in no small part the driving force behind the NLW's engagement with Wikimedia. He successfully completed the Welsh Government funded Wicipop project earlier this year and will soon be managing the Wici-Health project, again in collaboration with the Welsh Government. Obviously, working with major stakeholders is challenging and requires a great deal of skill and dedication but it does result in projects that engage with the community and deliver social benefits by creating content in the medium of Welsh. The innovative use of the ArticlePlaceholder application and Wikidata lists during the Wicipop project is an excellent example for other language editions of Wikipedia to follow. Jason has been very busy during the past year running edit-a-thons to engage with new audiences and advocating Wikipedia and Wikidata during his conferences presentations but still finds time to scrape websites for metadata, answer random questions and generally support my Wikidata Visiting Scholar projects. We should be grateful to have Jason as a member of our Wikimedia community. Sic19 (talk) 09:45, 14 July 2017 (BST)
Partnership of the Year
National Library of Wales
Even if i do say so myself, i think the National Library of Wales deserves a nomination for their unparalleled commitment to Wikimedia UK and the wider Wikimedia movement. The NLW are now coming to the end of a 36 month full time residency. They have released 15,000 images to commons and have helped to create 33,000 wikidata items. They have held 20 Edit-a-thons, and users attending NLW events have created 10,000 new articles since January 2015. The library has been committed to supporting Wikimedia projects and has helped other Welsh content producers share their content on Wikimedia platforms, such as CADW (27,000 wikidata items) and Sain Records (7,000 sound clips). They have agreed to open their doors to Wiki visiting scholars, and have embeded Wiki based activities into their volunteer programme. They have partnered with the Welsh Government to run projects aimed at improving Welsh language content, and they have now appointed a permanent full time Wikimedian to their staff in order to maintain and develop their partnership with Wikimedia long term. Jason.nlw (talk) 15:15, 11 July 2017 (BST)

Wellcome Library
Like Jason, I'd like to nominate the partner who I've worked with over the past year: Wellcome Library has been a fantastic partner institution. Having already uploaded 94,450 images to Commons, this year they've also hosted their first Wikimedian in Residence. As part of this, they've fully funded and catered lots of events, and helped engage other organisations (such as the Royal College of Nursing, the Institution of Engineering & Technology, CREST, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine) in contributing to Wikimedia projects. Wellcome have been particularly strong in supporting events aimed at improving the gender gap and also working with potentially challenging topics such as mental health. Their pride in and communication of the Wiki-work happening has been priceless in bringing the possibilities of working with Wikimedia to the attention of lots of people, institutions and groups who might not have previously considered it. Zeromonk (talk) 14:07, 12 July 2017 (BST)

National Library of Scotland
I'd like to nominate NLS for their continued support for open knowledge in Scotland. Not content to have recruited Scotland's first Wikimedian in Residence Ally Crockford, back in July 2013, NLS have this year recruited Dr Susan Ross, the world's first Gaelic Wikimedian in Residence. The Library holds a significant collection of Gaelic material, and the residency is an opportunity both to engage the public with that collection, and to provide much-needed support to Uicipeid. As was shown as the recent Celtic Knot conference, minority language Wikipedias (and collaboration thereon) provide a key site for the production of cultural identity. Their support and leadership is invaluable to the sector. Lirazelf (talk) 10:39, 13 July 2017 (BST)
I would like to endorse this nomination. From the very beginning of Ally's residency, NLS have embraced Wikimedia and worked hard on an organisational level to look at how they can make their resources more accessible on Wikipedia. Elflin (talk) 22:02, 13 July 2017 (BST)

Honourable Mention
User:Sic19
Simon Cobb (Sic19) has worked incredibly hard this year developing cultural Wikidata. As the Wikidata visiting scholar with National Library of Wales he has created over 10,000 Wikidata items and showcased the benefits of creating open linked data using visualisations, and by writing blogs. He ran a successful session at LODLAM 2017 aimed at developing collaborative Wikidata projects across the sector. In his role at the Leeds University Library he has also run several Wikipedia sessions and has been a strong advocate for Wikimedia within that institution. She's done a fantastic job of highlighting to scientific and acaedemic communities how they can improve Wikipedia and be involved in editing, and perhaps most importantly she planned, secured funding and external speakers for, and hosted two huge sessions for school students (more to follow!). The focus on women in STEM meant that her work has been excellent for highlighting gender gap issues and working to improve them too. For more details of her work, see the Wellcome Residency Reports. ===User:Andrew Davidson===
Andrew D. has been a tireless supporter of editors, editathons, and general-wikiness. He's attended a great many events over the past year and done a stellar job of helping new editors to find their feet. He's particularly briliant at putting new pages through DYK so that they find a wider audience. Events such as the huge school session at Imperial would have been impossible without his support. ===London Wikimedians===
I know this is probably too broad to be acceptable as an entry, but I would like to recognise the support provided by London Wikimedians who attend the regular Meetups. They have been so welcoming and generous with their time and ideas for how to run events (many of which London Wikimedians have come and helped with too). == Where and when ==
The workshop will take place on the weekend of 4-5th July in Edinburgh, and it will be run by a professional training organisation.

The timings of the event are: Tuesday 9:30am — 6:30pm, Wednesday 9am — 5pm. Lunch will be provided; we are also planning a social dinner after the training on Tuesday. It is vital that you do not miss the start of the training session, so before confirming your availability please do make sure you can make the start time of the training. We are able to cover travel and accommodation for the UK participants, if we receive advance notice of this.

The event is open to anyone who can make a credible commitment to support Wikimedia UK training in future (or to their home chapters if coming from outside of the UK). It will also be a strong advantage to have already been involved in training. We are particularly keen to hear from people based outside of London, who haven't been involved with our organisation in the past, but are very interested in supporting our training and editing events.

Interested but not sure if this event is for you? Hear from the past participants here.

Aims
The workshop is a chance for you to:
* Get accredited and receive detailed feedback about your presenting and training skills
* Get general trainer skills which you can then apply when delivering specific Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons workshops etc.
* Share your skills with others
* Develop the ability to help design a training programme that serves Wikimedia UK in the long term

Places are limited to make sure that each participant gets individual attention and feedback, so please sign up below to express your interest.

Course details
The course focuses on enabling the participants to develop and deliver high quality training which draws on their own skills and expertise. You can then apply these skills whenever you run a training session. Note that this is about training, not presenting, so we will not be focusing on developing content of presentations on e.g. Wikipedia. This will be provided separately if you need it.

By the end of the course the participants will be able to:
* Set training objectives and structure a session with appropriate material to meet those objectives
* Present information clearly to different audiences and use visual aids effectively
* Identify ways to make the sessions interactive and participative and deal with questions

As a part of the course you will also be receiving an hour long 1-1 telephone feedback. This provides the opportunity to discuss your performance and reactions to the course privately. It promotes intense reflection and rounded learning.

The participants will also be able to:
* Recognise the importance of diversity in the training context
* Respond appropriately to the needs of volunteer trainers
* Understand the impact of different learning and communication styles when designing and delivering training
* Use active listening to guide their interaction with participants
* Give effective and appropriate feedback to other participants

Sign up here
Please tell us about your training background (inside or outside Wikimedia) and knowledge of Wikimedia projects (it's not a problem if you don't have any).
This event is for volunteers who want to take a leading role as a trainer in the Wikimedia movement. This will be a mixed event - both for UK participants, and also prospective trainers from other Wikimedia chapters. It will be free for UK participants, if you're coming from abroad do get in touch about costs.

For initial queries contact richard.nevellwikimedia.org.uk.

Curious about what is involved in being a Wikimedia UK trainer? Have a look at the role description.

Where and when
The workshop will take place on the weekend of 4-5th July in Edinburgh, and it will be run by a professional training organisation.

Please also provide an email address or username through which you can be contacted. We will be contacting you closer to the date of the event to confirm your place.
Theme
150 years ago, in 1865 the Mimosa carried a small band of Welsh emigrants in search of a better life from Liverpool to the Americas. They established a colony (Y Wladfa) in Patagonia with Welsh schools, churches and Eisteddfodau. The pioneers faced many challenges and their dream of an independent Welsh state was not to be, but their legacy remains today. The Welsh language can still be heard today in the chapels and tea rooms of Patagonia. The aim of this event is to share the story of the brave colonists who left everything they knew and sailed into the unknown in search of a dream.

Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
Attendees will be given the chance to learn how to edit Wikipedia, to add and improve content relating to the Welsh Colony in Patagonia. Experts will be on hand to provide source material and to help with editing and adding pictures to Wikipedia.

Peoples Collection Wales - Share your images
Peoples collection Wales invites you to share stories, photographs, letters, documents and objects relating to the Welsh in Patagonia. Staff will be on hand to scan and record your material and upload it to the Peoples Collection platform where they can be shared with the world. And why not release your images to Wikipedia at the same time? so that they can be added to the Worlds largest encyclopedia.
