Wikimedia UK works with volunteers to help them deliver projects that improve the content of Wikipedia and its sister sites. We help them to deliver events, to gain access to cultural and educational materials, and to find new ways to make good use of the projects, such as in higher education. We deliver training sessions for people who would like to learn to edit, and we work closely with partner institutions to provide access to cultural materials that can improve the content of the projects.

We encourage the use of open licenses for cultural and educational materials so that they be freely shared. We also offer project grants to members of the chapter, to help pay for equipment, source materials and other resources that will help them with their editing or outreach work.

I've been editing since March 2009 and I'm an administrator on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Like many other editors, I was browsing a Wikipedia article and saw the edit button, and thought "well, that looks interesting", so I clicked on it and started editing. Now, nearly five years and 60,000 edits later, I'm still around, so obviously the experience wasn't too traumatic!

These days, I'm probably best known for my admin work on the English Wikipedia where I've been known to handle both the routine stuff that just involves a few clicks and some of the more complex tasks that require thought and judgement. I would hope that people think I do a reasonable job and tend to make the right decisions. But I'm a writer first and foremost, having been the main contributor to six featured articles and also dozens of others that are considered to be of a good quality. One of these featured articles appeared on the frontpage of the English Wikipedia and resulted in over 36,000 visits to the article in one day.

To learn and improve as an editor over the years has taken plenty of trial and error, with the aid of guidance and advice from some friendly experienced editors along the way. Being an editor on Wikipedia has definitely made my writing better. My admin work has also made me a more patient person - evaluating everything to make the right decision, rather than rushing in.

If you're passionate about a subject, or you know about something that you think is overlooked, you like working with other people, you like being part of a vibrant community where you're judged on the merits of your contributions alone, or if you just have some spare time you want to fill, you'll enjoy being a Wikimedian!

If you ever get stuck, or find yourself lost and confused, don't be afraid to ask for help. A good place to look for help from more experienced editors on the English Wikipedia for example might be the [[:en:Wikipedia:List_of_administrators#Active|list of active admins]]. Alternatively, just type your question on your user talk page which you can find on the top of any page once you're logged in and write "<nowiki>{{help me}}</nowiki>" after it - someone should then be along to answer your question shortly.

The Wikipedia voice intro project is a project by Wikipedia editor [[User:Pigsonthewing|Andy Mabbett]] to make audio recordings in which Wikipedia subjects - whether they are celebrities like [[:en:Stephen Fry|Stephen Fry]], or those notable for other activities like scientists or artists - say their name and introduce themselves in a short segment lasting around ten seconds or so. The recordings are then uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and shown on the subject's Wikipedia article, so that readers know what the person sounds like and how to correctly pronounce their names.

Aside from Stephen Fry, contributors to the project so far include lunar astronaut [[:en:Charlie Duke|Charlie Duke]] and British peer [[:en:Jim Knight|Jim Knight]]. You can find all of the voice recording made for the project so far on [[:commons:Category:Voice intro project|Wikimedia Commons]].

A related project that Andy has been working on is the [[:commons:Commons:BBC voice project|BBC voice project]] where the corporation is releasing hundreds of audio snippets of notable people talking recorded on some of their radio programmes over the years. At an event at New Broadcasting House on 18 January 2014, over three hundred suitable clips were identified by volunteers, which the BBC are in the process of reviewing, processing, and [[:commons:Category:BBC voice samples|uploading to Wikimedia Commons]]. Examples of clips that have been uploaded and used on the English Wikipedia include that of World Wide Web inventor [[:en:Tim Berners-Lee|Sir Tim Berners-Lee]] and Nobel Peace Prize laureate [[:en:Aung San Suu Kyi|Aung San Suu Kyi]].

Hi John, I'm confused as to why you've removed the correct information I wrote about my own event and replaced it, [https://wikimedia.org.uk/w/index.php?title=Events&diff=71246&oldid=71244 in this edit], with incorrect information. The event I'm speaking at has no particular connection to Imperial College, and the link you provided makes clear that the host organisation is the ALT, not Imperial. This is one of the strangest editing clashes I've been involved in. The incorrect listing has been copied to the front page (which I've corrected as well). Forgive me if I'm wrong, but it looks like you made no attempt to contact me and clarify the nature of the event before making the change. From the Tech Committee minutes, I think the info email was going to no longer be maintained by volunteers. To keep transparency and a volunteer-centric approach, it may be better to use an address that does not go to a place where volunteers are not allowed to help. == Kanban for editathons ==

I just saw the newsletter with a picture of the {{wp|kanban board}} used at the Women in Classical Studies editathon. What a great idea! It helps people share what they are working on. Helps to avoid edit conflicts. Enables organisers to list all the articles that have been improved. It could possibly work well for a recap session at the end too, where people talk about the changes they made.

Who was involved with that editathon? Who has used it elsewhere? I would love to hear how it has been used in practice.

::: The group were quite well prepared prior to the editathon. They had identified a number of articles to create - some had already done the research and started to writing in their sandbox. When we began the second part of the editathon they each committed to an article, wrote it on a sticky note and stuck it to the wall! Moving the notes from left to right was surprisingly motivating and a good excuse to stretch ones legs. Also used the sticky notes for an evaluation exercise at the end of the session. Another idea for editathons: [https://www.slideshare.net/sparkagility/training-from-the-back-of-the-room Training from the back of the room.] I recently went to a training course that used this approach and it was really good. I think it would work particularly well with something like an editathon, which isn't branded as training.

Rough outline of how it could work:
*After basic intros, etc, ask people to stand up and arrange themselves in order of experience of editing Wikipedia. Encourage people to speak to the people next to them, get an idea of their experience.
*Get the people at each end of the group to talk a little bit about there experience, so we all know the range of experience in the room.
*Split the group into small teams of ~4 people. Say that is 4 groups, number the line 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4... etc and everyone with the same number is in the same group. That way the teams all have a range of experience.
*Get people to explain to their team mates:
**What they normally do on Wikipedia
**What they would like to do today
**Anything they see that might stop them from achieving what they want to do today
*If there are specific articles to edit, these can go [[#Kanban for editathons|on the kanban board]]

*Organisers should also bring topics to put on the kanban board
*Encourage people to work as a team on a topics

: I welcome this exposure to the technique- it is very much what I have been saying for a couple of years. Teaching is a relationship formed between the student and the teacher- and the teacher is there to listen and facilitate the learning. Training seems to be lagging behind- and the TtT sessions have mainly been about 'from the front training' and improving presentation technique. There are several caveats to 'pupil centred learning' that we found out when this was trialled wholesale in the 1960s, along with open plan classrooms and project work. So can I just quickly go through them.
#No method works for each student- no method works for each trainer. I use a variation of this called Independent Resource-based Learning- which means I have worked up a bank of Flash Cards/ Training Sheets that cover every scenario, which I can give to the students as I flit round the room- each having just enough information to answer their specific query.
##Some students feel threatened by being asked to contribute verbally and are 'passive absorbers'
##Some students are not there 'to learn to do', but want their staff to contribute and need to know enough to be able to hold a sensible discussion.
##We might believe ''The general idea is to encourage people to work together and share there skills'' but are we sure that they wish to sign-up?
##Dropping back to Sarahs 6 trumps slide- she is extrapolating what works for her- and I see that our clientele can be significantly different. Her groups seem to be far homogenous, and her examples are from easy target groups. It is the same mistake that Secretary of States for Education make all the time.
#The classroom practice is one technique. We use this in schools to disorientate troublemakers, as friendship groups work better. A friendship group gets down to the task instantly, a contrived group wastes too much time building a new hierarchy, before anything is started. There is the practical difficulty of people moving seats, and reorganising all their baggage and electronics- wheelchairs are another challenge. For older clients movement stimulates the bladder and as everyone is on the move, it gives the message that it is OK to slope off to the loo again or to answer an incoming text in an adjoining room. Though you are seating the group in an random pattern- you do have them seated and that is control. Again older clients resent party games- they are focussed on doing something. On an IT course, the clients are more amenable than say a language class- it is the nature of the subject- I am not certain how neophyte wikipedians will react.
#The kanban board is a good idea- and has been used for years in language classes- it was called a post-it board, and every staff room has one. Like anything, thought is required to select how the colours are used and how it is marked up before the class. To-do/doing/done may be a bit limiting. I would have thought that a horizontal line Articles above and Techniques below - each divided into To-do/doing/done.
#There is an assumption that the learners can absorb spoken information. With age- memory goes. Short-term, so you can hold 4 things in the brain at one time instead of the youthful 7, and the medium term memory so if you don't write it down it will be gone the next day. (And if you do write it down you will lose the paper!) This is the reason that handouts should be available.
#The trainer flitting around the room is excellent for the student as it addresses the students needs, but it takes a lot of time and you cannot afford to sit down and give a long, or satisfactory explanation at each stop. When you land with a new group, they feel the need to be polite and welcoming which usually involves some chitchat, and you need to bore down immediately to the nature of the problem. As a concrete example- the group are improving the article on an :en:Melchisédech Thévenot- and come across a method of citation they have never seen before- ( why is it ''citation'' there and ''cite journal'' here? Whats the difference? Are there other ways we could do it - pressing help it says ''<nowiki><ref>[http://www.example.org Link text], additional text.</ref></nowiki>.'' There are five other groups in the room- so you need to have an answer ready before they have asked the question. To cope I have 'prepared sheets' [https://www.dropbox.com/s/3kiqwxo795f6zjs/Individual%20skill%20resource%20sheet.odt?dl=0- Individual Skills Resource Sheets on Dropbox] that I can give to the student, then move on. Wikimedia UK is in the process of writing our proposal to the Wikimedia Foundation for funding during 2018/19. The deadline for the bid is 1st October after which it is assessed by staff at the Foundation, there is an opportunity for community feedback and questions, and the Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) meet to consider proposals and make recommendations about grants.

As 2018/19 is the final year of our 2016 - 2019 strategy, our programme for next year is in many ways a continuation of our activities in 2017 and falls under three key strands:

# Diverse content and contributors
# Promoting open knowledge
# Education and Learning

These strands are directly related to our three strategic goals, which are to:

* Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects
* Contribute to the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level
* Support the use of the Wikimedia projects as important tools for education and learning in the UK

We would welcome input from the UK community into our plans for next year - which we are still shaping - and have created a short video to highlight our programme strands which you can watch [https://youtu.be/56s3Ch7sHbQ here]. You can give us feedback on our programme anytime, but if you’d like your views to be taken into account in our submission to the Wikimedia Foundation for funding, please do comment below by Friday 29th September. Some thoughts on {{wp|WP:ACTRIAL}} and our events:
*It makes sense to encourage new users to work in {{wp|Wikipedia:Drafts|Draft: name space}}.
*This doesn't change the fact that it is worth asking people to create an account in advance (and to remember their password!)
*We have to expect that some people won't create an account and most of those who have won't be auto-confirmed - this is OK.
*If there are admins present at the event, they can make new users confirmed.... although I wouldn't stress over it - there is no harm in the Draft: name space.
*All the above is less of an issue if we take the approach of [[#Training from the back of the room]] described above. If the group is split into teams that are deliberately set to have the full spread of ability, we can encourage people to help other team members, including the following:
**Middle-ability people to show the people with no account how to create an account.
**Experienced editors to help newer editors to find a page that might need editing.
**Experienced editors to create pages that other team members are interested in editing.
You could even get admins to confirm accounts of non-confirmed people in their team, but it might actually be better to not do that. If the experienced people in the team have actually created the article then at least we know it is in their contributions and so they can steward the article towards improvement. e.g. 1. the day after the event, they might go back to the article and tidy it up, 2. if the article gets tagged for deletion, they are better able to discuss it and improve it, whereas a new user may feel bitten.

Preferably during the training session, so people can see their work "live" on Wikipedia, which will create excitement. Ideally, well before the end of the training so that people can continue to edit their articles in main space - seeing that this is a normal thing to do is important.
::I fringe benefit of this approach is that each article edited will be in the contributions list of at least one non-new user. That way, they can "steward" the article to a certain extent. This will be particularly important if the article is nominated for deletion - having someone who knows the ropes will help to get the article in a position to keep - and help to argue that it should be kept. But more generally it will be useful, to keep the article quality up.

Hey rock drum,

Like the layout on the glamcamp page but it makes it almost impossible for people to add their names. Two suggestions for this and future layouts like this is to either a) template the whole layout, putting media wiki template variables that allow people to put in their names simply (I would say that this is the best option) b) insert a seperate template for people to put their names with an edit button next to where their names go (probably the least desirable option). Always remember, most people on wiki arn't used to having to work through HTML/Mediawiki template markup.

As a general note for you, I really suggest you having a look at using css for stuff like this. It allows you to seperate and template it all off leaving the page significantly cleaner and a little more accessible for less technically proficient people.

Hi Rock drum, I have just registered for the above. Although I am a wikipedia editor, I have not attended one of these events before. My particular area of interest happens to be Liberal Party history. I am prepared to commit for the whole day if I find it useful. I don't have a lap-top though. I have uploaded to wikipedia a number of portraits of politicians and see this as an opportunity for further portraits to be uploaded should a scanner be made available. I am assuming that you will be liaising with the NLC over what part of their archive they will be moving into the DLG Room for the day. I do not know the nature of the archive, perhaps it is just a collection of published books. Perhaps they can make photographic records available. Obviously, if we are going down this path, we will need to seek their consent for any image that is still under copyright, to be used in wikipedia. My other specific area of interest is Liberal parliamentary candidates; finding the full names of some of the more obscure candidates. If the available NLC archive includes records of lists of candidates or copies of candidates election literature, then this would also be useful. We've been busy in the past few months developing new programmes and partnerships, but as it's the end of the year, we'd like to update you about all the interesting projects and partnerships we have been working on and tell you about some things we are planning for the near future. Here's a round up of some highlights:
* Dr Martin Poulter has been appointed to continue his valuable work in Oxford with a second phase of the residency at Bodleian Libraries, and we have partnered with the Hypatia Trust in Cornwall to support their Wikimedian working to improve content on Cornish women.
* We've been working on improving the look of our website and have updated the [[blog:|look of the blog]] to be neater and work better on mobile displays. We are also trying to make our MediaWiki skin look nicer too, but this is a larger task that will take a bit longer. You might also notice that this is the first Newsletter sent out through MailChimp rather than CiviCRM, which will also help to reduce the early 2000s HTML feel of some of our content. We apologise profusely if you were only getting our newsletter for the nostalgia value of it :)
* Wikimedia UK staff and volunteers took part in the Museums Computer Group's [http://museumscomputergroup.org.uk/meetings/museumstech-2016/ Museums + Tech conference], Mozfest 2016, the Association for Learning Technology's [https://storify.com/WarwickLanguage/openedsig-webinar Open Access Week event] and Ada Lovelace Day, which Wellcome Library Wikimedian-in-Residence Alice White celebrated with an editathon on women in STEM subjects at the Institute of Engineering and Technology.
* In wider Wikimedia community news, there has been some interesting research published by the Harvard Business School which resulted in some positive coverage for the reliability and neutrality of Wikipedia. == Mozfest 2016 in London ==
We attended Mozilla's open source festival in London's Docklands on October 29-30. It was a great opportunity to talk to other Wikimedians and people in the wider open source community who share our values and discuss subjects from Intellectual Property law and community best practice to the gender gap and data driven journalism. Katherine Maher of the Wikimedia Foundation was one of the keynote speakers, and Lucy Crompton-Reid, Wikimedia UK's Chief Executive, led a session on equality and diversity on Wikimedia. We also attended sessions on Open Badges and interviewed Wikimedian Fabian Tompsett about how we might use them in the Wikimedia community. Both videos are available on YouTube, and on Commons (embedded below along with the talk given by Katherine Maher).

== In search of a Gaelic Wikipedian ==

In partnership with the National Library of Scotland, we have been looking to hire a Gaelic Wikipedian to work throughout Scotland and especially in the Highlands where the majority of Gaelic speakers reside to encourage people to improve the quality and scope of content on Uicipeid, the Gaelic Wikipedia. Applications are now closed and we hope to be able to announce the successful candidate shortly.

Wikimedia UK is committed to expanding the diversity of content on the Wikimedia projects and their reach and usefulness to different communities, and in the UK we have a special opportunity to support the development of minority indigenous languages that have existed in the British Isles for thousands of years. We have made excellent progress in expanding content on the Welsh Wikipedia in recent years to support the half a million people in the UK who can speak Welsh, and now we have a great opportunity to support the thousands of Gaelic speakers in Scotland. == Dr Martin Poulter reappointed Bodleian Library Wikimedian-in-Residence ==

We are delighted that the University of Oxford has funded a second year of a Wikimedia residency, and that Martin Poulter has been appointed to work part-time for a year embedding Wikipedia, Wikidata and related sites in the university’s teaching, research and public engagement activities.

Dr Poulter served as the Wikimedian in Residence at the Bodleian Libraries for one year ending in March 2016, leading wiki training at nine public events and giving sixteen other workshops and presentations. The images bulk-uploaded during this placement now get more than 3 million views per month from being used to illustrate Wikipedia articles in 49 languages.

Thanks to funding from the IT Innovation Challenge Martin is returning to the Bodleian with a cross-university remit. The new project is about embedding innovative use of Wikimedia sites across the university. This will involve:

*training staff in the university to run Wikimedia-related events such as editathons;

*helping research projects to enhance their impact by sharing outputs on Wikidata and Wikipedia;

*creating customised training workshops for academics, librarians and other staff in the university; and

*sharing training materials.

The aim is to collaborate with a different large research or educational project each month. The first two partners are the Hillforts Atlas Project and the Voltaire Foundation. The former is a collaboration between the universities of Oxford and Edinburgh, producing a definitive database of hillforts in the British Isles. The latter publishes definitive critical volumes of the works and correspondence of Voltaire. Both projects can reach a larger audience by helping to improve Wikidata and Wikipedia. Other research projects and cultural institutions will be supported on a first-come, first-served basis.

Wikimedians In Residence are currently employed at the National Library of Wales, the Wellcome Library, and the University of Edinburgh, as well as cultural and scholarly organisations around the globe. Martin Poulter can be contacted at martin.poulter@bodleian.ox.ac.uk .

== Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 UK Winners Announced ==
More than 250 people took part in the UK competition, uploading 6,200 photos of cultural heritage which anyone can reuse. Thank you to everyone who took part. The winners of the overall competition will be announced in December.

Wiki Loves Monuments is a global photographic competition run by the Wikimedia Foundation and its local chapters like Wikimedia UK. We encourage photographers to upload photos of places that have Wikipedia articles so that those photos can be used to illustrate Wikipedia.

== Kurdish Wikipedia Project ==

Wikimedia UK has recently started a project based at the Kurdish Cultural Centre in Kennington to improve content on Kurdish subjects as well as to improve the two Kurdish Wikipedias (Kurmanji and Sorani dialects) which collectively have around 40,000 articles. They currently rank at number 104 and 111 on [[m:List_of_Wikipedias|this list]] of language Wikipedias by size. We have started to organise events to train Kurdish speakers to edit the English Wikipedia to improve coverage of Kurdish subjects, and hope to create a group of editors who can teach other Kurdish speakers to improve the Kurdish language Wikipedias.

For developing economies such as the Kurdish regions of Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran, creating better open educational resources could have significant positive effects on the development of a growing educational sector which doesn't have access to much government investment. *Training twelve members of staff from all different disciplines to become Wikimedia Ambassadors in order to support academic colleagues in the longer term.

This offers candidates the opportunity to study in depth Christian history, thought and practice in and from Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Highlighting female success stories is crucially important as, according to figures from Equate Scotland, Women in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) represent only 14-18% of the workforce and biographies of notable women on Wikipedia similarly represent only 15% of the total number (NB: this figure has moved to 16% because of WikiProject Women in Red's efforts).

== Welsh Wikipedia Project Birds ==

A small wiki can move quickly, and does not become bogged down in a quagmire of fossilised tripe. Some dinosaurs morphed into birds, and lived.

We have just over 81,000 articles on the Welsh Wikipedia. It is a small wiki, but therein lies it's greatness: the smaller it is the faster it morphs. Take Wikidata as an example. We received, from the Llen Natur Welsh language society, their latest database of living birds, each with a Welsh name, Latin and English. It took over 10 years to create by a team of ornithologists, some professionals working on this alone.

Wikimedia UK requested the use of this database on an open licence, which was freely given, and I then made a request to User:Succo to bot them up on Wikidata, and around 8,000 matched the WD Latin name. The rest were done by hand. To date, this is what we've done in partnership with Llen Natur:

;1. We added 9,500 bird images in a 3rd party website
The community with the help of Bangor University then created a code for the preferred image on each species to appear in Llen Natur's Species Dictionary, thus turning a text only online dictionary into a [http://www.llennatur.com/Drupal7/llennatur/?q=node/6#tylluan beautiful Illustrated Dictionary].

;2. We created 9,000 new articles on cywiki
With the database, we were now able to create 9,000 new articles on cywiki, with most of the taxobox automatically calling information from Wikidata.

;3. Creating 15,000 links from Llen Natur's Illustrated Dictionary to cywiki
This was easily done by Bangor University for Llen Natur, directing readers to the Welsh Wikipedia. All bird articles, and a further 6,000 other species.

;4. Wikidata Lists! Morph or fossilize!
Having [https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Llywelyn2000 added a few WD Lists on other languages], including Indonesian, Vietnamese, Basque, Irish Gaelic and Spanish, I then added a list of notable Welsh people on English Wikipedia - which was taken down within two flutters of a wing. "Wikidata is NOT referenced!" they shouted, and argued and stomped about like Giraffatitan. "Good bye!" I said, and off I went in search of more inspiring wikis. To this day, en-wiki is one of the only Wikipedias which still hasn't hugged and caressed Wikidata within articles. Not one.

Every single bird species on the Welsh WP, however, has a Wikidata table, automatically called up and updated daily. When species change taxon, it's automatically added on cywiki. The total number of WD Lists on every language Wikipedias at October 2016 is just under 3,000; we have 9355 on cywiki (as of 7 November 2016).

What loud calls I make, what blowing of trumpets! No, just a fact. We liked Wikidata, and discussed as a community how could we utilise it within cywiki to save finger clicking, to update info daily, to be up to date. ;5. Tweeting and other bird sounds
We had a great day at the British Library a few weeks ago, chirping away at clips of birdsounds on Commons, connecting soundclips to more than 55 language wikis. As soon as we have enough, then they too will be automatically feed these into all bird articles on the Welsh Wikipedia, as well as into 3rd party websites, such as Llen Natur. And the Illustrated Dictionary quickly becomes a noisy, vivid, live space. And all different sounds and all different colours will entice the reader into that rich, diverse planet called multipedia. And let's sing in harmony: ''Viva la difference!''

;6. Birds also morph...
And with "the sum of all human data" appearing on that matrics, that all-connecting interweaving thread called Wikidata, we can now start creating apps and games based on birds (or any other subject) as a front for information on the Wikimedia projects. Can't Wikipedia, then, not be an AR game? Why not! Even dinosaurs had dreams!

== Welsh Wikidata Visiting Scholar ==

The charity has an ongoing and highly successful partnership with the National Library of Wales (NLW), and in April 2016 the Library employed the first [[:en:User:Jason.nlw/Wikidata_Visiting_Scholar|Wikidata Visiting Scholar]] in Simon Cobb to create linked data items out of the collection of 4650 landscape paintings held by the NLW.

Meticulously converting all of the objects in the collection to data items with properties based on data tags held by the NLW has allowed Simon Cobb and Jason Evans, Wikimedian in Residence, to visualise the collection in a number of interesting ways.

It is hoped that others will find innovative uses for the collected data to study the progress of the arts in Wales as well as the development of culture seen in the paintings, the artists responsible and the printers and publishers of the work. == Parliament partnership and editathon ==
Wikimedia UK is developing a partnership with the House of Commons to encourage an understanding of Wikipedia within the organisation and the sharing of data.

We will be holding our first editathon in Parliament on Saturday 19th November to introduce parliamentary staff to our work and teach them how to use Wikimedia projects. The event will also be open to the whole community, so if you would like to visit Parliament and see inside the buildings, why not join us? The event will be held in Portcullis House, the modern office building next to the Palace of Westminster, but there will also be a tour of the older buildings such as Westminster Hall, which will be 920 years old next year.

In a slight contrast to the centuries old surroundings, we will be talking to parliamentary staff about the data they produce and looking at what data they have which would be suitable to upload to WikiData. We are exploring the possibility of creating data items for parliamentary legislation, but there may be other kinds of content held by Parliament which would be suitable for upload onto Wikimedia sites.

We hope the event will provide a useful case study in using Parliament’s resources to create content which can be built on as Parliamentary staff learn to use Wikimedia projects as part of their workflow. The UK Parliament has a good reputation for sharing its data, but by working with Wikimedia UK, we hope to put that data to work in innovative and useful ways. My name is Katy Blackwood. I’m a music photographer, fledgling photo-journalist and writer that has been published in print, worked as a professional and, on Saturday, donated her time and photographs to Wikimedia UK in the name of knowledge and free content.

The event was Pride in London, an occasion surely close to the heart of anybody that values equality, inclusivity and solidarity, whether they are LGBT or not. In such a divisive week for the United Kingdom, it brought together an estimated one-million people to celebrate humans of all cultures and sexualities, highlighted by a triumphant parade.

Working with Wikimedia UK, I attended as a member of the media in order to create high-quality photography of the parade and its build-up. These photos, including some by John Lubbock, have now been released under a licence that allows them to be used, for free, by anyone.

As the summer rolls around, there are so many important cultural events which the Wikimedia community can engage with and create content about. The European Football Championships start this week, and the Olympics aren’t far away either. The festival season is already beginning, and there are hundreds of other cultural events taking place across the UK and the world, from religious ceremonies to elections, the London Comic Con, Pride, or any other kind of commemoration or anniversary events.

Wikimedia UK is hoping to support people who want to cover any notable events to create high quality images available under a CC BY-SA 3.0 license. We have grant funding available for photographers who know how to take great photographs which could be used across Wikimedia projects. We would also be interested to support people who would like to add other content besides photographs. If you are going to particular events, we also may be able to liaise with the organisers to get you accreditation.

Bodleian Wikimedian Martin Poulter says that although the digital world finds it hard to capture the intimacy of being in the presence of historical objects and texts, it can play an important role in adding value to the collections of museums, libraries and galleries which do provide that experience.

While working at the Bodleian, I’ve experienced what I call ‘the shiver’ many times. I had it when I realised I was reading Charles Darwin’s handwriting, or when shown a book that had been studied by Henry VIII. I saw it happening at the Marks of Genius exhibition when people encounter a Gutenberg Bible or a First Folio of Shakespeare.

The shiver is a realisation of a tangible connection to the past. It comes from authenticity, physicality and uniqueness. As such, it may seem irrelevant to digital information, which is endlessly reproducible and independent of physical location. However, when we think of how libraries can involve more people in that authentic experience, that digital world turns out to be crucial.

Bodleian Wikimedian Martin Poulter says that although the digital world finds it hard to capture the intimacy of being in the presence of historical objects and texts, it can play an important role in adding value to the collections of museums, libraries and galleries which do provide that experience.

While working at the Bodleian, I’ve experienced what I call ‘the shiver’ many times. I had it when I realised I was reading Charles Darwin’s handwriting, or when shown a book that had been studied by Henry VIII. I saw it happening at the Marks of Genius exhibition when people encounter a Gutenberg Bible or a First Folio of Shakespeare.

The shiver is a realisation of a tangible connection to the past. It comes from authenticity, physicality and uniqueness. As such, it may seem irrelevant to digital information, which is endlessly reproducible and independent of physical location. However, when we think of how libraries can involve more people in that authentic experience, that digital world turns out to be crucial.

The second one took place on Saturday 5 September in London. More details [[Wikipedia Science Conference/Submissions/Hackathon|here]]. :The most obvious component of the project was the conducting of the interviews. Over the course of three weeks in July 2014 we talked to 8 individuals: 2 employees of Wikimedia UK, 1 museum employee, and 5 Wikimedians in Residence - past and present. Katie Chan generously assisted on the shoots, in York, Edinburgh, and at the Royal Society of London’s headquarters at Carlton House Terrace. Over the following fortnight we completed the edit of the film, producing over 20 drafts before reaching the final cut. During Wikimania we showed the film [[wm2014:Submissions/The GLAM-Wiki Revolution|during a session on Saturday]] and it was well-received by attendees ([https://twitter.com/jpbowen/status/498102601590657024 photo from the screening]). The full film was uploaded to YouTube and Wikimedia Commons later that week, licensed CC-BY-SA 4.0. Over the following two months we edited a number of shorter videos using footage that had not made the final cut of the main film. In addition we wrote up the interviews into articles which were posted on the Wikimedia UK blog.

:Interviews were, on the whole, of good quality and accurately presented the facts in an easily-accessible way, addressing our target audience well. We stuck to a strict timescale and kept everything organised to prevent the shoot from becoming too long. The flow of the full film was good thanks to a structured plan developed in advance of filming.
:;What did not go well?
:Due to time constraints we were unable to find ideal locations for all of the interviews, resulting in some not turning out as well as we would have liked. Lighting for some of the interviews was fairly patchy but as shooting progressed we grew more capable at lighting the shots.
:;What would you do differently if you were to plan a similar project in the future?
:Although there were benefits to working in such a small team, the ability to work quickly and largely unimpeded by process, it would have been helpful to have have had more people involved in certain areas, a dedicated person to handle colour correction or sound editing for instance. Additionally, the short time frame meant that we were in almost every case unable to visit the interview locations prior to the date of filming. Ideally we would have had time to visit in advance and so have a better idea in advance of how to light the shots and set up the cameras etc.

The core benefit of the project was the spreading of awareness of the different GLAM projects supported by Wikimedia UK. We had aimed to have around 1000 views on YouTube within the first month; from 13 Aug 2014 – 9 Sep 2014 it received 1170 with an estimated 5297 minutes watched (about 3 days 16 hours). Over that same period Wikimedia UK's YouTube channel also had a net gain of 22 subscribers. The video was shared through Wikimedia social media channels ([https://www.facebook.com/wikipedia/posts/10152580495188346 Facebook] and [https://twitter.com/Wikimedia/status/500769574045102080 Twitter]), greatly increasing its traffic. The main film has received over 1500 views on YouTube as of 1 November 2014. Since the video was published on Wikimedia Commons, members of the international Wikimedia community have contributed to translating the subtitles into [[commons:Special:PrefixIndex/TimedText:The GLAM-Wiki Revolution.webm.|a number of languages]], with four - German, Finnish, French and Swedish - fully completed.

Re: travel there may be group bookings you can get, but the costs given seem v reasonable. Generally this looks like a good project and one we should support, I don't know if others in the community would be interested in being involved, or/and gathering materials from the various locations might provide a focus point to also bring together stories and media from community members which could be used in the run up to Wikimania (and are just a nice thing to have and share!), but that might be worth thinking about. Given the license, and length of the longer video, I wonder if it would be cool if we could make sure the disaggregate parts were available for others to use bits (maybe individual GLAM orgs would want their "bit" for their own purposes). :The most obvious component of the project was the conducting of the interviews. Over the course of three weeks in July 2014 we talked to 8 individuals: 2 employees of Wikimedia UK, 1 museum employee, and 5 Wikimedians in Residence - past and present. Katie Chan generously assisted on the shoots, in York, Edinburgh, and at the Royal Society of London’s headquarters at Carlton House Terrace. Over the following fortnight we completed the edit of the film, producing over 20 drafts before reaching the final cut. During Wikimania we broadcast the film [[wm2014:Submissions/The GLAM-Wiki Revolution|during a session on Saturday]] and it was well-received by attendees. The full film was uploaded to YouTube and Wikimedia Commons later that week, licensed CC-BY-SA 4.0. Over the following two months we edited a number of shorter videos using footage that had not made the final cut of the main film. In addition we wrote up the interviews into articles which were posted on the Wikimedia UK blog.

:Interviews were, on the whole, of good quality and accurately presented the facts in an easily-accessible way, addressing our target audience well. We stuck to a strict timescale and kept everything organised to prevent the shoot from becoming too long. The flow of the full film was good thanks to a structured plan developed in advance of filming.

:Due to time constraints we were unable to find ideal locations for all of the interviews, resulting in some not turning out as well as we would have liked. Lighting for some of the interviews was fairly patchy but as shooting progressed we grew more capable at lighting the shots.
:;What would you do differently if you were to plan a similar project in the future?
:Although there were benefits to working in such a small team, the ability to work quickly and largely unimpeded by process, it would have been helpful to have have had more people involved in certain areas, a dedicated person to handle colour correction or sound editing for instance. Additionally, the short time frame meant that we were in almost every case unable to visit the interview locations prior to the date of filming. Ideally we would have had time to visit in advance and so have a better idea in advance of how to light the shots and set up the cameras etc.

John Cummings is not one to shy away from large-scale projects. Fresh from helping build one of the largest Wikipedia endeavours ever - converting the Welsh town of Monmouth into the world’s first "Wikipedia town" - John moved on to become the Wikimedian in Residence at the [http://www.nhm.ac.uk/ Natural History Museum and Science Museum] (NHM).

His upbringing has played a key role in developing his interests, shooing him onto a path towards the role. "I've always had an interest in natural history," he says. "I didn't study science at university, but my mum’s a garden designer, I grew up in the countryside… This is one of those roles that probably doesn't happen that often."

He held the role at the museums in South Kensington between 2013 and 2014, and helped to promote a culture of openness there as well as exploring what the institutions could do with Wikipedia.

One major aspect of this was looking into content donations, and how they could be beneficial for the museums in promoting their content.

Established in 1660, the Royal Society is dedicated to preserving and promoting science expertise. From its base in central London, it serves as the United Kingdom’s academy for the sciences, boasting a wide portfolio of fellows from every walk of scientific life.

Though rooted in tradition, they are very keen to spread their prowess into the digital realm. John Byrne, a Wikipedian since late 2006, jumped at the opportunity to join them as a part-time Wikipedian in Residence for six months in 2014.

"The Royal Society sees itself as having the lead in the presentation of science to the general public," John explains, "and that’s a big concern, so it’s very interested in the popularisation of science. They hold lectures, they have book prizes for popular books about science.

Ally Crockford has spent a great deal of time researching in the National Library of Scotland – eight years, in fact – so when the opportunity to open its content for a wider audience came along she jumped at it. “What drew me to working here is the love that I have for the library,” she explains. “I’ve worked here for the last eight years as a researcher and I think it’s an amazing organisation.”

“When I saw the call for a Wikimedian I thought it was an amazing opportunity, because I know how much material is here in the library and how few people get to access that material regularly. To be able to provide access to the collections was wonderful.”

A room full of books has essentially become her habitat by this point. Though originally from Canada, Ally received her PhD in English literature from Edinburgh University, and throughout the programme was heavily involved with the library. Since July 2013, Ally has served as Wikimedian in Residence there.

During her tenure, Ally has worked on several projects aiming to extend the reach of the library’s content to a wider, global audience. One of the projects of which she is most proud was the Anybody But Burns editathon, a quest to fill Wikipedia with information about Scottish poets who don’t have the recognition that Robert Burns enjoys. <span class="plainlinks">[https://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2014/09/ally-crockford-national-library-of-scotland/<nowiki>[</nowiki>...<nowiki>]</nowiki>]</span>

Pat Hadley was part way through a PhD in archaeology at the University of York in the summer of last year when he decided to leave to explore new areas in which to apply his skillset. A natural scientist with a digital background, he is interested in the "ways in which the public engages with the past". For him, Wikipedia is an ideal platform to investigate this.

Since late 2013, he has worked as Wikimedian in Residence at York Museums Trust, helping them to share their collections through Wikipedia and its sister projects. An archaeologist of ten years, and a contributor to Wikipedia since 2011, Pat had been keen to find a museum in York interested in opening up access to their content.

In September 2013, Wikimedia UK supported the York Museums Trust, and two other institutions, in their search for a Wikimedian in Residence. The YMT is a charitable body which manages three museums, a contemporary art space, and a public gardens in the city.

"[The YMT] is a brilliant test case for the GLAM-Wiki project, because it's almost the most typical set of museums you could possibly imagine, all in one space," Pat explains.

Despite his background in academia, he was surprised to land the role. "I heard that the new scheme was going along, but I had no idea it would be me," he says.
