Hi all. Thanks for running this consultation - it's great to see this happening, and it's clear that a lot of thought has gone into the document. I've got a number of comments to make (as a UK volunteer, not in my role on the FDC), which I hope are helpful:

* The vision of the organisation seems to have changed considerably. At the moment it is "Our vision is open knowledge for all", and the new one is "Our vision is of a more tolerant, informed and democratic society through the shared creation of, and access to, open knowledge.". The addition of "a more tolerant, informed and democratic society" completely changes the vision - while 'informed' is good, 'tolerant' and 'democratic' are quite different concepts that I'm not sure should necessarily be envisaged by WMUK.
* I'm a bit worried by some of the outcomes given in the document, in particular:
** 1. The use of open knowledge has significantly increased access to the UK’s cultural heritage
*** Why the specific mention of 'cultural heritage' here, rather than 'the sum of all knowledge'? There is a lot of information out there that doesn't fall under the category of 'cultural heritage' (e.g., most of science. ;-) ).
** 4. WMUK is recognised as a leading organisation for open knowledge
*** This isn't an outcome in itself, it's a by-product.
* I'm uneasy by the emphasis given to advocacy here, but that may be because it's not a Wikimedia community norm - the focus tends to be more on 'inform and educate' than 'lobby or pushing a point of view'.
* What are the "Free Knowledge Advocacy Group" and "Advocacy Working Group"? That's the first I've heard of them. If they're internal working groups, that's great; if they're external, then it's probably best not to name them specifically so that you don't rule out other means of contributing to those objectives.
* The third strategic goal is written rather differently than the previous ones; the inclusion of medium and long-term goals here but not in the first two looks a bit odd, as does the mention of 'based on previous successful work' (what was this, why include a mention of 'successful'?) Also, what exactly is an 'educational institute here' - are we talking about primary, secondary, university, or other educational organisations?
* Although it's the shortest of the three strategic goals, I think that the first one is the most important. The second and third are useful goals, but they shouldn't distract from the first.
* "Wikimedia UK will seek to engage with volunteers in the delivery of all of our volunteers" - presumably the last "volunteers" was meant to be "activities"? Although I'm glad to see the word 'volunteers' being used more than it needs to be. ;-) I'd hope that WMUK would do more than "seek to engage", though - volunteers should be a fundamental part of everything that WMUK does, and it's worth remembering the principle that we've mentioned a lot in the past: "staff should only be doing things that volunteers can't, or won't, do." That particularly goes for things like developing partnerships and speaking at events, where volunteering isn't really mentioned specifically.
* I don't follow the link between this document, and the definition of the three programmatic areas - please could that be expanded upon? In particular, the third point of 'Advocacy' should probably be more of a 5-10% level activity, rather than a main programme area.
* I should note that it would have been easier to provide feedback in this consultation if the text being consulted about was on-wiki rather than in a PDF, both in terms of accessing the text, and being able to copy-paste quotes without format glitches.

One thing which came out of our discussion at the meet up is the vale of a co-productive approach, which is an important part of the [[w:The Wiki Way|Wiki Way]]. As far as I can tell there has been no steps taken to draw together what emerged from our two Volunteer Strategy Gatherings (VSG), and I would appreciate being pointed towards where the documents discussed in the [[Volunteer Strategy Gathering/July 2015|Project based approach]] part of the VSG held in July. As far as I can tell we have not been able to have any community discussion of how to take Project Management forward with WMUK. There are in fact different sets of principles of project management which can then be applied in different ways depending on the nature of the project. As we are going to be creating a blueprint for project managing wikimedia events, perhaps we should be highlighting this as an important step towards precisely having that community discussion and that we will be implicitly be developing a WMUK approach to project based work, even if the process is not as formal as creating policy.[[User:Leutha|Leutha]] ([[User talk:Leutha|talk]]) 13:32, 14 December 2015 (GMT)

Thanks Leutha! I wish we spoke about that at the meetup when I was there - these are good questions and it would make for an interesting discussion. Perhaps you could get in touch with the office to discuss?

I think the volunteer engagement workshop, being a half day, will be quite general in its approach, rather than a strategy of how to organise WMUK's volunteer programme specifically. I will ping your presentation to Midas so they can gain even more background to our work with volunteers. Project management training certainly arose as a reflection of the fact that we are encouraging volunteers to apply for grants and run projects (the core of the Volunteer Strategy day this year), but should also support building skills that are needed for this. I'm expecting that we will take quite a general approach, looking at overall good practice of managing projects or events.

*I would like to echo the concerns raised by [[User:Leutha|Leutha]]. These events are all very well, but they seem to lack focus and direction from the outset, and follow-up can be poor. It strikes me as a bit odd that WMUK should be seeking to train volunteers in project management when WMUK's own skills in this field might appear sketchy. For example, we had a four-hour session on 31 October to design some TfT training modules, but have heard nothing since. Richard Nevell set up a page, I made a few comments, then nothing. **Well there is an irony to it. After Wikimania 2014, I tried (and tried and tried) to get the chapter to think about a legacy, particularly doing something with the 200-odd volunteers from the conference (and the hundreds more who offered but, for one reason or another, weren't part of the event), but I got the distinct impression that nobody was interested, and the few efforts there were were led by two members of staff in their spare time (neither of whom now work for WMUK, more's the pity). Like so much of WMUK's resources, the opportunity was squandered. This is a large part of the reason that these are my first edits to this wiki for about a year. Nonetheless, gathering a lot of experienced people in a room for a day would be a valuable learning opportunity and is the sort of thing that the chapter is useful for, given that it has money to pay train fares and a physical space and other logistical support. So I say approach it with an open mind (or perhaps just a pinch of scepticism); hopefully the session will be useful and interesting, and in the worst-case scenario we can share our own experiences. As far as I can tell there has been no steps taken to draw together what emerged from our two Volunteer Strategy Gatherings (VSG), and I would appreciate being pointed towards where the documents discussed in the [[Volunteer Strategy Gathering/July 2015|Project based approach]] part of the VSG held in July. As far as I can tell we have not been able to have any community discussion of how to take Project Management forward with WMUK. There are in fact different sets of principles of project management which can then be applied in different ways depending on the nature of the project. I think the volunteer engagement workshop, being a half day, will be quite general in its approach, rather than a strategy of how to organise WMUK's volunteer programme specifically. I will ping your presentation to Midas so they can gain even more background to our work with volunteers. Project management training certainly arose as a reflection of the fact that we are encouraging volunteers to apply for grants and run projects (the core of the Volunteer Strategy day this year), but should also support building skills that are needed for this. I'm expecting that we will take quite a general approach, looking at overall good practice of managing projects or events.

It strikes me as a bit odd that WMUK should be seeking to train volunteers in project management when WMUK's own skills in this field might appear sketchy. For example, we had a four-hour session on 31 October to design some TfT training modules, but have heard nothing since. Richard Nevell set up a page, I made a few comments, then nothing. **Well there is an irony to it. After Wikimania 2014, I tried (and tried and tried) to get the chapter to think about a legacy, particularly doing something with the 200-odd volunteers from the conference (and the hundreds more who offered but, for one reason or another, weren't part of the event), but I got the distinct impression that nobody was interested, and the few efforts there were were led by two members of staff in their spare time (neither of whom now work for WMUK, more's the pity). Like so much of WMUK's resources, the opportunity was squandered. This is a large part of the reason that these are my first edits to this wiki for about a year. Nonetheless, gathering a lot of experienced people in a room for a day would be a valuable learning opportunity and is the sort of thing that the chapter is useful for, given that it has money to pay train fares and a physical space and other logistical support. So I say approach it with an open mind (or perhaps just a pinch of scepticism); hopefully the session will be useful and interesting, and in the worst-case scenario we can share our own experiences. In August 2015 a volunteer got in touch to ask about Wikidata training. There had been a previous session in the second half of 2014 that was popular and there will be many volunteers who weren't able to attend. If there is enough interest then a second session in the same vein can easily be arranged at Wikimedia UK's office. Ed Saperia has made a thoughtful provisional offer of his space, too. Charles Matthews has kindly offered to lead a session and hopefully other volunteers can be encouraged to deliver something, too.

My initial idea is to assume only familiarity with Wikipedia editing, and give a fairly gentle introduction to basic entry work on Wikidata, as the first session.

After that it is natural to look at two directions: semi-automated work (i.e. use of tools) which makes it easy to cover ground more quickly; and the various front ends that already exist to display Wikidata content. My initial idea is to assume only familiarity with Wikipedia editing, and give a fairly gentle introduction to basic entry work on Wikidata, as the first session.

The closest tube station is Old Street, which is on the Northern Line, two stops from King's Cross/St Pancras.

At Old Street tube station, follow signs to Subway 2 (green) turn left if you need a ramp, and then continue South (on City Road, heading away from the roundabout) for less than a minute on foot to get to Leonard Street and then east on Leonard Street (first left after Sainsbury's shop) for just over 100 meters. Hello. Thanks for sharing this document. There is a lot of good stuff here, although I'm afraid it's somewhat overshadowed by a number of very bad points. As such, here's some comments in the order that they occur in the document:

* If this document is aimed at being sharing online, then it doesn't really make sense for it to be in PDF format (which is aimed primarily at being printed out) rather than as a wiki page. Having it as a PDF impedes access, both in terms of the number of links/applications needed to access it, and possibly also for accessibility reasons.
* "The board was occupied with many issues and not concerned with questioning the programme" - I find that to be an odd statement, given how many questions were being asked by the board about the work of the chapter! Yes, there were many other questions also being asked, but saying it didn't question the statement is clearly wrong.
* It is very concerning that the reasons given for why WMUK should exist don't match up with the objects of the charity, nor the stated mission/values/strategic goals of the organisation! Also, saying "We believe we can make good arguments for our existence" but not actually giving those reasons (beyond an abstract list that doesn't go into substance) is rather pointless.
* "WMUK has achieved a lot in the last two and a half years." - WMUK has existed for 5.5 years now, why are the first 3 years being ignored?
* I am absolutely gobsmacked to read a statement saying that Wikimedia UK has been inhibited by "An Animal Farm culture of ‘Volunteers good, staff bad’." That is an outrageous statement to make. I'd like you to provide evidence to back that statement up, please, or to apologise for it.
* It's odd to see the FDC staff's comments quoted rather than the FDC's comments in the last round. I suspect that's because the FDC's comments were rather more critical?
* "The staff represent our largest cost and biggest asset." No, volunteers are (or should be) your biggest asset... However, "There have been constant criticisms that they do not represent real Wikimedians" <nowiki>{{citation needed}}</nowiki>... But as has been pointed out numerous times before, they would be much better off if they were supporting volunteers to do more, rather than "attempting to cover too much".
* "Getting the best from staff needs sufficient management support time and we don’t have this." Yes, I agree. Remember when I was pushing for the equivalent of an assistant manager/deputy?
* At this point, TBH I ran out of motivation to read further. I skimmed ahead looking for your proposals, but I couldn't find them. I also couldn't find the link to them in the contents page. At the very least, that should indicate that you need to clearly set them out in brief earlier in the document!

Imagine if you looked up your favourite film online and found… nothing. That's the case for far too many classics of feminist film.

The first ICA wiki-a-thon features a Salon with academics, filmmakers and curators. Chaired by moving image artist Sarah Turner, speakers include Elinor Cleghorn, Elizabeth Cowie, Sophie Mayer, and Lucy Reynolds.

This is a chance to further and exchange knowledge of feminist film and film theory. Bring a laptop and determination to shape history. A closed workshop will take place before the Friday Salon to post entries on Wikipedia.

Followed by a 5pm screening of She Must Be Seeing Things (Sheila McLaughlin, 1987).

I'd like your thoughts on how to develop a project based on Shakespearean text.

As part of the Living Paths Project, I recently met [http://www.swansea.ac.uk/staff/academic/artshumanities/ltm/cheesmant/ Dr. Tom Cheesman] and others at Swansea University. I'd like to suggest a WikiProject titled '''"WOW!" Will in Other Words!''' which will use crowd sourcing to gather and organise reliable metadata for versions of Shakespeare’s works in languages other than English. I'm not sure if this should be part of the existing [[:w:en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Shakespeare]] (may kick-start it!) or a brand new one?

Tom Cheesman's website www.delightedbeauty.org crowd-sources Shakespeare translations; it's a self-made Google site which displays around 180 versions, in over 30 languages, of one rhyming couplet from Shakespeare’s Othello (1604). As he told me, ''"This one couplet is a great challenge for translators, because of its ambiguity, its punning wordplay and its controversial implications regarding race, gender and political power. Each version expresses a different interpretation, making a fascinating study in re-translation-mutation-adaptation … or ‘versioning’. There can be no ‘straight translation’ of Shakespeare’s language."' I do believe that a WikiProject could develop this site in magnificent, way!

The second part of this projectwould be based on www.delightedbeauty.org/vvv demonstrates innovative, experimental interactive tools for exploring collections of comparable texts, working with 37 versions of one scene from Othello. This project was [http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-09/13/shakespeare-translation-comparison reviewed by Wired] in Septemebr 2012. Tools include a time-map showing the historical and geographical spread of German-language Othello versions: at http://othellomap.nand.io/.

The Project would attempt to answer such questions as:

#How many languages has Shakespeare been translated into?
#What different cultural forms does translation (or “cross-language versioning”) take, in different times, places and languages? When plays are re-versioned as new playscripts, the texts can be ‘faithful’, full versions of the original, but they can also be adaptations of many different kinds, transposing the action to different times and places, reducing and expanding and revising, turning tragedies into farces, histories into satires, and so on. And plays can also be ‘versioned’ as other genres: prose stories, comic strips, films, radio shows, series of paintings, dance shows, etc etc.
#What are the trends in popularity of Shakespeare’s different works in different times, places and languages, as measured by publications and performances?
#When was Hamlet first or most recently translated into Danish? Or Henry V into Welsh?
#In which African languages has Othello been published or performed?
#How many Italian versions of Romeo and Juliet have there been, and which are considered the best for reading, or the best for staging?
#The Merchant of Venice is on the national school curriculum in China today: 22 million 14-year-olds read the trial scene each year (source p.7). Which of the many Chinese versions are read in classes? Which versions are watched on screen (and who does the subtitling?) Do the various versions interpret Shylock in different ways? (You bet they do – but how different?)

;Scope of Project
Probably 100+ languages have at least one work of Shakespeare. All of his works have been translated at least once into all the “major” European and Asian languages. In most “major” and some “lesser” languages, all or many of his works have been re-translated, re-adapted or re-versioned several times, even over and over again.

Let's look at one language: German:
German has possibly the greatest number of Shakespeare versions, of all languages. Tom guesstimate around 5,000 items, growing by around 50 year on year. A bibliography published in 2003 includes around 2,000 printed items, and does not claim to be complete for the period covered (to 2000). From the past c. 250 years, we have around 70 published versions of the entire set of 154 Sonnets; hundreds of published versions of single sonnets or selections (over 200 versions of Sonnet 66 are collected in a recent anthology); around 60 versions of the Complete Plays (±37 plays); probably 120+ published versions of Hamlet; up to 80 versions of the 10 next most popular plays; numerous revised editions of many versions; hundreds of audiovisual releases (radio, film, tv, audiobooks); dozens of theatrical productions at major public theatres each year (each using a different version); scores more amateur productions each year; production-associated scripts; and assorted other versions. Since 2000, no fewer than eight new German versions (translations/adaptations) of Othello have been added to the theatrical script agencies’ catalogue (www.theatertexte.de).

And that's just one language. I might be wrong, but I do believe this could be one hell of a project! Any takers?

The point, of course, was that there are vast numbers of UK resident editors on Wikipedia, far more than the 2000 who self-identify, almost none of whom are members. As membership growth is stalled, a one-off event could be run specially for them, separate to Wikimania, to celebrate their contribution to all of the projects. This could be combined with a membership drive. To be honest, I don't have the time to organise this and I don't know if anyone else does either, but I think that it's the sort of thing that ought to be happening. :Though Simon used a tool to do a one-off transfer of the example image, 4 years ago the vast majority of nearly 2 million UK Geograph images were transferred by Multichill's clever GeographBot as a large project, which become controversial and has yet to be re-run due to the difficulties of categorization of the resulting backlog. One of the projects that WMUK is now supporting is adding sensible location categories to all Geograph images (such as a County name) and we'll be looking again at an exercise Multichill experimented with a couple of years back to take this down to, say, the UK "village" level, something that my work with the Ordnance Survey open data makes far more accurate since the earlier experiments (in a way that does not exist for most other countries!). Multichill approached me recently about running GeographBot again for a refresh, and I hope in a few months time to make a joined up smart workflow so that the images can appear with more helpful categories than the last time.

I'd like your thoughts on how to develop a project based on Shakespearean text.

As part of the Living Paths Project, I recently met [http://www.swansea.ac.uk/staff/academic/artshumanities/ltm/cheesmant/ Dr. Tom Cheesman] and others at Swansea University. I'd like to suggest a WikiProject titled '''"WOW!" Will in Other Words!''' which will use crowd sourcing to gather and organise reliable metadata for versions of Shakespeare’s works in languages other than English. I'm not sure if this should be part of the existing [[:w:en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Shakespeare]] (may kick-start it!) or a brand new one?

Tom Cheesman's website www.delightedbeauty.org crowd-sources Shakespeare translations; it's a self-made Google site which displays around 180 versions, in over 30 languages, of one rhyming couplet from Shakespeare’s Othello (1604). As he told me, ''"This one couplet is a great challenge for translators, because of its ambiguity, its punning wordplay and its controversial implications regarding race, gender and political power. Each version expresses a different interpretation, making a fascinating study in re-translation-mutation-adaptation … or ‘versioning’. There can be no ‘straight translation’ of Shakespeare’s language."' I do believe that a WikiProject could develop this site in magnificent, way!

The second part of this projectwould be based on www.delightedbeauty.org/vvv demonstrates innovative, experimental interactive tools for exploring collections of comparable texts, working with 37 versions of one scene from Othello. This project was [http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-09/13/shakespeare-translation-comparison reviewed by Wired] in Septemebr 2012. Tools include a time-map showing the historical and geographical spread of German-language Othello versions: at http://othellomap.nand.io/.

The Project would attempt to answer such questions as:

#How many languages has Shakespeare been translated into?
#What different cultural forms does translation (or “cross-language versioning”) take, in different times, places and languages? When plays are re-versioned as new playscripts, the texts can be ‘faithful’, full versions of the original, but they can also be adaptations of many different kinds, transposing the action to different times and places, reducing and expanding and revising, turning tragedies into farces, histories into satires, and so on. And plays can also be ‘versioned’ as other genres: prose stories, comic strips, films, radio shows, series of paintings, dance shows, etc etc.
#What are the trends in popularity of Shakespeare’s different works in different times, places and languages, as measured by publications and performances?
#When was Hamlet first or most recently translated into Danish? Or Henry V into Welsh?
#In which African languages has Othello been published or performed?
#How many Italian versions of Romeo and Juliet have there been, and which are considered the best for reading, or the best for staging?
#The Merchant of Venice is on the national school curriculum in China today: 22 million 14-year-olds read the trial scene each year (source p.7). Which of the many Chinese versions are read in classes? Which versions are watched on screen (and who does the subtitling?) Do the various versions interpret Shylock in different ways? (You bet they do – but how different?)

;Scope of Project
Probably 100+ languages have at least one work of Shakespeare. All of his works have been translated at least once into all the “major” European and Asian languages. In most “major” and some “lesser” languages, all or many of his works have been re-translated, re-adapted or re-versioned several times, even over and over again.

Let's look at one language: German:
German has possibly the greatest number of Shakespeare versions, of all languages. Tom guesstimate around 5,000 items, growing by around 50 year on year. A bibliography published in 2003 includes around 2,000 printed items, and does not claim to be complete for the period covered (to 2000). From the past c. 250 years, we have around 70 published versions of the entire set of 154 Sonnets; hundreds of published versions of single sonnets or selections (over 200 versions of Sonnet 66 are collected in a recent anthology); around 60 versions of the Complete Plays (±37 plays); probably 120+ published versions of Hamlet; up to 80 versions of the 10 next most popular plays; numerous revised editions of many versions; hundreds of audiovisual releases (radio, film, tv, audiobooks); dozens of theatrical productions at major public theatres each year (each using a different version); scores more amateur productions each year; production-associated scripts; and assorted other versions. Since 2000, no fewer than eight new German versions (translations/adaptations) of Othello have been added to the theatrical script agencies’ catalogue (www.theatertexte.de).

And that's just one language. I might be wrong, but I do believe this could be one hell of a project! Any takers?

The point, of course, was that there are vast numbers of UK resident editors on Wikipedia, far more than the 2000 who self-identify, almost none of whom are members. As membership growth is stalled, a one-off event could be run specially for them, separate to Wikimania, to celebrate their contribution to all of the projects. This could be combined with a membership drive. To be honest, I don't have the time to organise this and I don't know if anyone else does either, but I think that it's the sort of thing that ought to be happening. :Though Simon used a tool to do a one-off transfer of the example image, 4 years ago the vast majority of nearly 2 million UK Geograph images were transferred by Multichill's clever GeographBot as a large project, which become controversial and has yet to be re-run due to the difficulties of categorization of the resulting backlog. One of the projects that WMUK is now supporting is adding sensible location categories to all Geograph images (such as a County name) and we'll be looking again at an exercise Multichill experimented with a couple of years back to take this down to, say, the UK "village" level, something that my work with the Ordnance Survey open data makes far more accurate since the earlier experiments (in a way that does not exist for most other countries!). Multichill approached me recently about running GeographBot again for a refresh, and I hope in a few months time to make a joined up smart workflow so that the images can appear with more helpful categories than the last time.

I have been to an unconference that was part of a wider conference and found it was a great way to find people of a common interest and get them talking to each other. I'd like your thoughts on how to develop a project based on Shakespearean text.

As part of the Living Paths Project, I recently met [http://www.swansea.ac.uk/staff/academic/artshumanities/ltm/cheesmant/ Dr. Tom Cheesman] and others at Swansea University. I'd like to suggest a WikiProject titled '''"WOW!" Will in Other Words!''' which will use crowd sourcing to gather and organise reliable metadata for versions of Shakespeare’s works in languages other than English. I'm not sure if this should be part of the existing [[:w:en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Shakespeare]] (may kick-start it!) or a brand new one?

Tom Cheesman's website www.delightedbeauty.org crowd-sources Shakespeare translations; it's a self-made Google site which displays around 180 versions, in over 30 languages, of one rhyming couplet from Shakespeare’s Othello (1604). As he told me, ''"This one couplet is a great challenge for translators, because of its ambiguity, its punning wordplay and its controversial implications regarding race, gender and political power. Each version expresses a different interpretation, making a fascinating study in re-translation-mutation-adaptation … or ‘versioning’. There can be no ‘straight translation’ of Shakespeare’s language."' I do believe that a WikiProject could develop this site in magnificent, way!

The second part of this projectwould be based on www.delightedbeauty.org/vvv demonstrates innovative, experimental interactive tools for exploring collections of comparable texts, working with 37 versions of one scene from Othello. This project was [http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-09/13/shakespeare-translation-comparison reviewed by Wired] in Septemebr 2012. Tools include a time-map showing the historical and geographical spread of German-language Othello versions: at http://othellomap.nand.io/.

The Project would attempt to answer such questions as:

#How many languages has Shakespeare been translated into?
#What different cultural forms does translation (or “cross-language versioning”) take, in different times, places and languages? When plays are re-versioned as new playscripts, the texts can be ‘faithful’, full versions of the original, but they can also be adaptations of many different kinds, transposing the action to different times and places, reducing and expanding and revising, turning tragedies into farces, histories into satires, and so on. And plays can also be ‘versioned’ as other genres: prose stories, comic strips, films, radio shows, series of paintings, dance shows, etc etc.
#What are the trends in popularity of Shakespeare’s different works in different times, places and languages, as measured by publications and performances?
#When was Hamlet first or most recently translated into Danish? Or Henry V into Welsh?
#In which African languages has Othello been published or performed?
#How many Italian versions of Romeo and Juliet have there been, and which are considered the best for reading, or the best for staging?
#The Merchant of Venice is on the national school curriculum in China today: 22 million 14-year-olds read the trial scene each year (source p.7). Which of the many Chinese versions are read in classes? Which versions are watched on screen (and who does the subtitling?) Do the various versions interpret Shylock in different ways? (You bet they do – but how different?)

;Scope of Project
Probably 100+ languages have at least one work of Shakespeare. All of his works have been translated at least once into all the “major” European and Asian languages. In most “major” and some “lesser” languages, all or many of his works have been re-translated, re-adapted or re-versioned several times, even over and over again.

Let's look at one language: German:
German has possibly the greatest number of Shakespeare versions, of all languages. Tom guesstimate around 5,000 items, growing by around 50 year on year. A bibliography published in 2003 includes around 2,000 printed items, and does not claim to be complete for the period covered (to 2000). From the past c. 250 years, we have around 70 published versions of the entire set of 154 Sonnets; hundreds of published versions of single sonnets or selections (over 200 versions of Sonnet 66 are collected in a recent anthology); around 60 versions of the Complete Plays (±37 plays); probably 120+ published versions of Hamlet; up to 80 versions of the 10 next most popular plays; numerous revised editions of many versions; hundreds of audiovisual releases (radio, film, tv, audiobooks); dozens of theatrical productions at major public theatres each year (each using a different version); scores more amateur productions each year; production-associated scripts; and assorted other versions. Since 2000, no fewer than eight new German versions (translations/adaptations) of Othello have been added to the theatrical script agencies’ catalogue (www.theatertexte.de).

And that's just one language. I might be wrong, but I do believe this could be one hell of a project! Any takers?

:I had forgotten I had even made this suggestion. The point, of course, was that there are vast numbers of UK resident editors on Wikipedia, far more than the 2000 who self-identify, almost none of whom are members. As membership growth is stalled, a one-off event could be run specially for them, separate to Wikimania, to celebrate their contribution to all of the projects. This could be combined with a membership drive. To be honest, I don't have the time to organise this and I don't know if anyone else does either, but I think that it's the sort of thing that ought to be happening. Wasn't there some sort of awards system once? We could give awards like at the Oscars - ''Wikis''? :Though Simon used a tool to do a one-off transfer of the example image, 4 years ago the vast majority of nearly 2 million UK Geograph images were transferred by Multichill's clever GeographBot as a large project, which become controversial and has yet to be re-run due to the difficulties of categorization of the resulting backlog. One of the projects that WMUK is now supporting is adding sensible location categories to all Geograph images (such as a County name) and we'll be looking again at an exercise Multichill experimented with a couple of years back to take this down to, say, the UK "village" level, something that my work with the Ordnance Survey open data makes far more accurate since the earlier experiments (in a way that does not exist for most other countries!). Multichill approached me recently about running GeographBot again for a refresh, and I hope in a few months time to make a joined up smart workflow so that the images can appear with more helpful categories than the last time.

== International Women's Day 2014 ==

We have been approached by a wikimedian who has been affected by a medical problem and can't edit easily any more. He wants to finish a couple of pages that are important to him (adding links I think) and I wonder if there is a kind person out there I could put him in contact with.
